많은 나라의 경찰은 코로나가 발생한 이후에 사회 질서를 유지하기 위해 노력해 왔 다. 경찰은 의료 및 공중보건 분야에 비해 코로나 대응에 대한 종합적인 체계와 구체적 인 프로그램이 미흡한 것이 사실이다. 그러나 경찰은 많은 노력을 통해 코로나 예방과 확산 방지에 많은 기여를 하였다. 사회적 거리두기, 자가 격리 등이 지역사회를 효과적으로 보호할 수 있었으나, 정책 위반에 대한 처벌 등으로 예상하지 못한 문제도 발생하였다. 경찰에 대한 불신으로 접 촉자에 대한 신고를 꺼리거나 자신의 동선을 숨기는 경우도 있었다. 또한, 경찰이 코로 나와 관련된 정책을 차별적으로 집행할 것이라는 우려도 있었다. 이와 같은 우려와 불신은 지역사회 경찰활동으로 해결할 수 있다. 경찰은 코로나 시 대에 지역사회를 지키기 위하여 많은 희생과 노력을 해 온 것이 사실이다. 경찰재난 대 책본부를 설치하여 운영하고 있으며, 코로나 조사 지원 시스템을 구축하여 확진환자의 동선을 추적하여 코로나의 확산을 막기도 하였다. 이와 더불어 지역사회 경찰활동에 기반하여 다양한 계획을 수립하여 시행하였다. 규 칙 위반자들을 신속하게 적발하여 규칙준수자가 피해를 보는 일이 없도록 하였으며, 지역사회 주민뿐만 아니라 경찰관의 보호를 위하여 여러 방안을 시행하고 있다. 지역사회 경찰활동에 대해서는 다양한 정의가 있지만 지역사회 경찰활동이 지역 주 민들과 긴밀히 협력하여 경찰과 지역사회의 상호 작용을 통해 유대감과 신뢰를 강화하 는 것이라는 데에는 이견이 없다. 지역사회 경찰활동이 원활하게 이루어질때만 시민의 권리를 제한하는 여러 정책을 시행할 수 있는 것이다. 전례없는 코로나 상황에서 지역 사회 경찰활동의 중요성은 높아질 수 밖에 없다.
