Chengyi and Zhuxi reinterpreted the concept of gewuzhizhi(格物致知) on Daxue to fit their own intellectual structure, when the concept of huoranguantong(豁然貫通) was introduced. Huoranguantong is a spiritual enlightenment in which individual principles are synthesized into one principle after countless investigations of things have been repeated. “There will be a thorough comprehension of all the multitude of things, external or internal, fine or coarse, and every exercise of the mind will be marked by complete enlightenment.” However, this Zhuxi’s concept is premised on the metaphysics of liyifenshu. Therefore, in this paper, I want to interpret the concept of huoranguantong in a contemporary perspective via the concept of insight emphasized by Gestalt theorists. According to Koehler, insight is a renewed recognition of the relationship between a problematic situation and its solution. Reorganizing individual knowledges in different ways would open a new psychological insight for problem solving. Through this concept of insight, I will discuss the features of huoranguantong. First of all, In order to reach huoranguantong, it is necessary to learn about individual cases first, having Zhuxi insist that gewu should precede. Huoranguantong is an emergent insight, and takes place when the perception of objects in the world is reorganized. Huoranguantong strengthens the relationship between me and the others in the world and helps the escape from isolation and oppression, which allows individuals to have positive emotions. This interpretations have the advantage of understanding huoranguantong from a more contemporary perspective.

정이와 주희는 『大學』의 격물치지 관념을 자신의 사유구조에 맞게 재해석하였고, 이때 활연관통 개념이 도입된다. 개별 사물의 이치에 대한 탐구를 누적하다보면 어느 시점에 개별적인 이치들을 보편적인 관점에서 종합할 수 있는데, 이것이 바로 활연관통이다. 활연관통의 순간에 “온갖 사물의 표리정조를 알 수 있고 마음의 전체대용이 밝아진다.” 그러나 주희의 이러한 활연관통 개념은 리일분수라는 형이상학을 전제하고 있다. 따라서 이 논문에서 필자는 현대 형태주의자들이 강조한 통찰(insight) 개념을 경유하여, 활연관통 개념을 현대적으로 해석하고자 한다. 쾰러에 따르면 통찰은 문제 상황과 그 해결방안에 대한 관계를 새롭게 인식하는 것이다. 개개별의 지식들을 이전과는 다른 방식으로 재조직할 때, 문제해결을 위한 새로운 국면에 접어들 수 있다. 필자는 이러한 통찰의 개념을 경유하여 활연관통의 특징들을 논의하였다. 우선 활연관통이 이루어지기 위해서는 개별적인 사례나 이치를 일정 수준 이상 학습해야 하므로, 주희는 격물 공부를 선행할 것을 주장한다. 이어 활연관통은 창발적인 깨달음으로서, 천하사물에 대한 인식이 재조직화될 때 이루어진다. 활연관통은 나와 타자의 관계성을 확보하여 고립되고 억압된 나를 해방시킴으로, 개인은 긍정적인 감정(즐거움)을 가질 수 있게 된다. 이러한 통찰 개념을 경유한 활연관통의 해석은 주자학을 보다 현대적인 관점에서 이해할 수 있는 장점이 있다.
