The purpose of this study is to analyze current operation status of graduate schools and suggest future improvement methods, especially in terms of comparing metropolitan and non-metropolitan graduate schools. This study analyzed longitudinal graduate schools data from 2008 to 2020, which is provided by Higher Education Information Disclosure System. In order to understand operational status of graduate schools, the data of 106 out of 185 graduate schools(58.6%) were analyzed. In addition, a survey was conducted on 120 deans of graduate schools and 50 University Evaluation Committee members to investigate improvement methods for graduate school system. According to the results, the number of graduate students is higher in Seoul metropolitan area, and foreign students are also increasingly concentrated in the metropolitan area. The survey result also indicates that the Seoul metropolitan area has higher quality of graduate education program compared to non-metropolitan areas.

이 연구의 목적은 일반대학원의 운영 현황을 분석하고 개선방향을 모색하는 데 있는 데, 특히 지역별 관점에서 수도권과 비수도권 대학원 운영에 대한 차이를 파악하고자 했다. 연구방법은 대학정보공시에 있는 대학원 통계분석(2008년~2020년)을 시계열적인 차원에서 분 석하였고, 일반대학원의 운영 실태를 파악하고자 185개 일반대학원 중 106개(58.6%)를 대상 으로 운영 현황을 조사하였다. 또한 대학원 제도 개선을 위해서 대학원장 120명과 대학평가 위원 50명을 대상으로 설문조사(총 101명 응답, 59.4%)를 실시하였다. 연구 결과를 종합하면, 일반 대학원 학생 수가 수도권에 더 많고 외국인 학생도 점차 수도권에 집중되고 있다. 신 입생 모집 비율을 보면 석사과정에서 수도권이 비수도권보다 타대학 출신이 훨씬 많은 것으 로 보아 비수도권에서 수도권 대학원으로 진학하는 유동인구가 많다고 볼 수 있다. 설문조 사에서도 수도권이 비수도권에 비해서 연구능력이 신장되고 대학원 교육의 질적인 우수성이 높다고 인식을 했다.
