When did modern historical studies begin in Japan? What role did Katsumi Kuroita (1874-1946, 黑板勝美) play in modern historical studies in Japan; what is the significance of his role? The purpose of this study is to explore answers to these questions. However, these two research tasks appear to be interrelated. The reason is that mainstream Japanese modern history was the outcome of government-led history compilation and positivist historiography, which are collectively referred to as the so-called "an imperialist view of history", and the person who played the most pivotal role in this government-patronized historiography was Kuroita, a historian at that time. In addition, it can be said that Kuroita was closely related to the beginning of modern historical studies of Korea, a country which experienced colonialism during the period of "Imperial Japan." The Study of National History (国史の研究) was compiled by Kuroita based on such a view of history. Therefore, it is considered that a thorough analysis of Kuroita’s book is an appropriate method for gaining insights into modern historical studies based on his thought, as well as for insights into the origins of government-patronized historiography in Japan.

본고의 목표는 일본근대역사학의 시작은 언제일까? 그리고 일본근대역사학에서 고대사가 구로이타 가쓰미(黑板勝美, 1874～1946년)가 차지하는 역할과 의미는 무엇일까? 에 대한 답을 찾고자 하는 것이다. 이 두 가지 과제는 서로 연동하고 있는 듯이 보이는데 그 이유는 일본근대역사학의 주류는 이른바 ‘아카데미즘사학’으로 불리는 관찬 사학이며 실증주의 사학으로, 이 ‘아카데미즘사학’의 가장 핵심적인 존재가 바로 구로이타 가쓰미(黑板勝美)라고 생각하기 때문이다. 이뿐 아니라 ‘제국일본’의 식민지 경험을 한 한국의 근대역사학의 출발과도 구로이타는 연관이 깊다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 구로이타의 역사관이 집대성된 것이 바로 통사 『국사의 연구』로서, 이 『국사의 연구』, 특히 초판과 재정판 이후를 면밀히 비교 분석하는 것이 바로 구로이타가 생각한 근대역사학 나아가 ‘아카데미즘사학’의 연원을 찾는 길이라 생각한다.
