This study is a detailed investigation of the meaning of dream symbols, conducted by analyzing the dream narratives compiled in the ancient Chinese text Taiping’guangji(太平廣記) “Dream” (夢). There are 170 dream narratives introduced in this text, and some of the concepts appearing in dreams are rich in symbolism and require distinct interpretation. In this study, the symbolisms of sun, pearl, and dog, which appear repeatedly among several symbols, were analyzed. The sun has a deep connection with the emperor/imperial family, as can be easily inferred. Most of the dreamers in the Taiping’guangji “Dream” were men, and after dreaming of the sun, they obtained government posts that enabled them to approach the emperor. Regarding pearls, although there are only two sets of dream narratives related to them, the pearls in the dream narratives attract attention in that they show the significance of pearls as a universal symbol. Pearls are usually mythical and magical perceptions, which represent the idea of ‘moon-water-woman’, and are accepted as symbols with magical healing properties. The two ancient narratives related to pearls in Taiping’guangji not only reproduce the meaning of ‘moon-water-woman’, but also show richness, good luck, and fortune as concepts extended from magical healing properties. The dog, as an animal that has appeared in the myths and religions of various cultures for a long time, has various symbolisms. In particular, the dog can be considered to have the symbolism of ‘destructive death and revival’ which are concepts at two extremes in relation to death. The dog shown in the Taiping’guangji “Dream” also has universal symbolisms. Dogs were portrayed as animals that brings about destruction and failure, and imply disease and death. Thus, the three dream symbols analyzed in this paper clearly show universality and specificity. Many dream researchers in the East and the West have avoided mechanical interpretations based on the ‘dream interpretation books’ when they interpreted dreams. The dreams in Taiping’guangji “Dream” also show that the situation and psychology of the individual dreamer should be considered above all else when trying to interpret dreams, even if relying on universal symbol interpretation. Studies on Taiping’guangji “Dream” will extend on the studies of dreams in ancient China, which have been relatively poorly studied, and furthermore, will broaden the horizon of dream interpretation being attempted in various fields such as psychoanalysis, psychology, religious studies, and folklore.

이 연구는 고대 중국의 문헌을 통해 꿈의 상징의미를 궁구한 논문이다. 분석 대상인 『태평광기』는 송(宋) 초기까지의 기록을 망라한 유서(類書)로서 춘추(春秋)시 대로부터 송대(宋代) 초기까지 축적된 꿈 서사를 보여주는 텍스트이다.  『태평광기』 ｢몽｣류에는 170개의 꿈 서사가 소개되어 있는데, 꿈에 나타난 일부 소재는 상징성 이 농후하여 별도의 해석을 필요로 한다. 이 연구에서는 몇 가지 상징물 가운데 반 복적으로 출현한 태양, 진주, 개[犬]의 상징성을 분석하였다. 태양은 쉽게 유추할 수 있는 것처럼 남성, 황제나 황실과 깊은 연관성을 가진다. 진주와 관련된 꿈 서 사는 두 조(條)에 불과하지만, 꿈 서사의 진주는 보편 상징으로서의 진주가 가진 의미를 잘 보여준다. 진주는 보통 신화적ㆍ주술적 존재로서 달-물-여성의 의미를 재현하고, 주술적 치유성을 가진 상징물로 받아들여진다.  『태평광기』 속 진주 관련 두 고사는 달-물-여성의 의미를 재현할 뿐만 아니라, 주술적 치유성에서 확장된 개념까지 보여주고 있다. ‘개’는 오랫동안 다양한 문화권의 신화와 종교에 등장하 는 동물로서 복합적인 상징성을 갖고 있으며, 특히 죽음과 관련하여 양단의 개념 인 ‘파괴적 죽음과 부활’ 등의 상징성을 가진 동물이다.  『태평광기』 ｢몽｣류에 보이 는 ‘개’ 역시 보편적 상징성을 갖고 있다. 개는 파괴와 실패를 가져오고, 질병과 죽음을 암시하는 동물로 묘사되었다. 이 논문에서 분석한 세 가지 꿈 상징은 보편성 과 특수성을 잘 보여준다. 동서양의 많은 꿈 연구자들은 꿈 해석에 있어 ‘해몽서’에 근거한 기계적 해석을 지양했다.  『태평광기』｢몽｣류의 꿈 역시, 꿈 해석을 시도할 때, 보편적인 상징 해석 에 기댄다고 하더라도 몽자 개인이 처한 상황, 심리 등이 무엇보다 고려되어야 함을 보여준다. 고대 중국 문헌을 통한 꿈 연구는 지금까지 상대적으로 빈약하게 연구되 어 온 고대 중국의 꿈 연구를 확장하고, 더 나아가 정신분석학․심리학․종교학․ 민속학 등 다양한 분야에서 시도되고 있는 꿈 해석의 지평을 넓히게 될 것이다.
