The purpose of this article is to reveal the background of the conflict between daughters-in-law in three Korean classical novels. In all the three works dealing with conflicts between daughters-in-law there is a common theme that the conflicts occur because of the love of their parents-in-law. Such conflicts were caused by a change in property inheritance practices in the late Joseon period. The society of the late Joseon period was transformed into a wealth-seeking society. In addition, inheritance practices were changed to a differential form, based on the decision of the parents, and women were not allowed to inherit their parents’ property. This change caused conflict among daughters-in-law. However, the conflict between brothers due to the inheritance of property in the strengthened patriarchal society at that time has not been treated as the subject of the novels. In the novels, the cause of the conflict was attributed to the daughters-in-law, and it was the result of favoritism of parents-in-law and not by property inheritance issues. Meanwhile, patriarchal order was instilled in women by emphasizing the relationship between the upper and lower classes through the conclusion of the novel. The novels that appeared during the late Joseon period emphasized patriarchal order while dealing with ethics, but reflected the social changes of the era by dealing with the settings and events relating to various characters. The emergence of conflict between daughters-in-law in classical novels is the result of considering many female readers of that time, and is meaningful in that it expands the theme of the novel and reflects a changed society.

본고에서는 며느리 갈등을 다룬 세 편의 소설을 대상으로 며느리 갈등이라는 설정이 등장하게 된 배경에 대해 살펴보았다. 며느리 갈등을 다룬 세 작품은 시부 모의 사랑을 이유로 갈등이 빚어진다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. 며느리 갈등이 시부모의 사랑을 이유로 발생하는 것은 조선 후기 사회의 변화에 따라 재산상속 관행이 변화한 결과라 볼 수 있다. 조선 후기에 이르러 재산상속은 부모의 결정에 따른 차등 상속으로 바뀌었고 재산상속에서 여성이 소외되었다, 더욱이 조선 후기 의 사회는 부를 추구하는 사회로 변모하였다. 이런 상황에서 며느리는 재산상속에 민감할 수밖에 없었고, 재산의 차등 상속은 며느리 사이에 갈등의 원인이 될 수밖 에 없었다. 하지만 당대의 강화된 가부장제 아래에서 재산상속을 표면화할 수는 없었기 때문에 소설에서는 갈등의 원인이 재산상속의 주체인 시부모의 사랑으로 바뀐 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 아울러 며느리 갈등의 결과를 통해 가부장적 질서를 여성들에게 심어주고 있었다. 고전소설에서 며느리 갈등의 등장은 변화된 사회의 모습이 반영된 결과이자 소설사적으로 소재의 확대라는 측면에서 의의가 있다고 할 것이다.
