This study examines “The Story of Old Chang,” written by Annie Laurie Adams Baird (1864–1916) for a missionary work booklet. As no literary review so far has dealt exclusively with this work, this study contributes to a better understanding of Baird's early efforts at proselytizing and the literary history around the transition to modern times. Before analyzing this work, chapter 2 examines the time of publication and the originality of “The Story of Old Chang,” on which there is no consensus in the literature. Historical records, including The Korean Repository, suggest that the work was already in existence as early as 1897 and was considered an original story by Baird. Chapter 3 examines the basis of this story to reveal that it is related to phrases found in the Gospel of Luke, the Book of Revelation, and the Genesis, in addition to those already mentioned in earlierstudies, such as the Parable of the Wedding Feast in Matthew 22:1–14. Chapter 4 analyzes the themes of the story by studying two actions: putting on a formal at tire by dressing in the son's garment and stepping into Old Chang's house to join the feast. It is confirmed that this work, by combining a parable and a sermon, conveys the key messages of Christianity clearly, which are Atonement and Redemption. The significance of “The Story of Old Chang” lies in the fact that it represents a new form of a proselytization booklet, which does not merely convey biblical knowledge but borrows motives from the Holy Bible. “Saitpyuljeon,” another fictional work by Baird, also uses the same method, where the originalcentralplot is fleshed out with references or allusions to Biblical episodes. This study therefore elucidates up on one of the writing styles employed by Annie Baird to create texts for missionary work.

본 연구는 미국 북장로회 소속 선교사 애니 베어드의 작품 <장자노인론>을 대 상으로 하였다. <장자노인론>에 관한 개별 작품론은 찾아보기 어려운데, 19세기 말에 창작된 이 작품을 살펴보는 작업은, 애니 베어드의 초기 선교사역을 탐색하 고 우리 소설사를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이라고 생각하였다. 작품 분석에 앞서 2장에서는 <장자노인론>의 출간 시기와 창작 여부에 대해서 검토했다. 선행연구들이 언급한 작품의 창작 시기와 창작 여부에 대한 입장이 상 이하여 다소 혼란스러운 면이 있는데, “The Korean Repository” 등의 기록을 근거 로 하여 볼 때, 이 작품은 1897년에는 이미 존재하고 있었으며, 당시에도 애니 베 어드의 창작 작품으로 여겨지고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 3장에서는 <장자노인론> 창작에 활용되었을 가능성이 있는 성경 구절들을 검토했다. 그 결과 선행연구에서 언급되었던 <마태복음> 22장(‘혼인 잔치의 비유’)뿐 아니라 <누가복음>, <요한계시록>, <창세기> 등에 수록된 구절들과의 관련성도 확인할 수 있었다. 4장에서는 <장자노인론>의 주제와 관련하여, ‘아들의 옷을 입는 것’(예복)과 ‘장 자의 집에 들어가는 것’(잔치 참여)이라는 두 가지 행위에 초점을 맞춰 생각해보았 다. 그 결과 이 작품은 여러 성경 구절들을 활용하면서도 ‘대속’과 ‘구원’이라는 기 독교의 핵심 메시지를 우화 형식의 본 이야기와 설교문 형식의 해설을 활용하여 선명하게 전달하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. <장자노인론>은 비록 소설적 구성력이나 흥미 요소를 부각하는 측면은 약하지 만, 작가의 상상력이 아닌, 성경의 구절들에 기반을 두면서도 교리를 일방적으로 나열하는 설교문과는 변별되는 이야기 형식의 전도지를 구상하고 실현했다는 점 에서 의미가 있는 작품이다. 이처럼 이야기의 큰 틀을 세운 후 성경의 다양한 구절 들을 직간접적으로 활용하여 한 편의 이야기를 채우는 창작 방식은 그의 또 다른 작품 <샛별전>에서도 확인할 수 있는 것으로, 애니 베어드가 선교문서를 창작하 는 글쓰기 방식의 한 유형을 보여주기 때문에도 의미가 있다 하겠다.
