The Weifa(未發) practice method is a method of cultivation to break the chain of desires in the state before the mind perceives them. Lee Hwang’s ‘Weifa practice method’ contains a deep reflection on how humans control, regulate, and moderate desires in an era of desire to eliminate the cause of social conflict. Yi Hwang says that when the mind is in a Weifa state, Qi(氣) is not exerted, and when there is only Li(理), evil does not exist. At the moment of transitioning from the state of Weifa to reality, the mind is a union of Li and Qi, but at this time, Qi does not exercise authority, so Li ’s purity can be expressed as it is. Lee Hwang emphasizes the need to be careful even in unseen places as it removes human desires, and to be afraid even in places where people do not listen. A place where joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure have not yet been radiated, that is, a place neither seen nor heard, is a place where emotions have not yet sprouted. At this point, it is a warning and fearful attitude to make it a practice. Yi Hwang cultivates the essence of heavenly Li during Weifa, and guards against exercising the power of human desires during Yifa(已發). This point emphasizes that the mind is the subject of cultivation. The cultivation of the fundamental origin is the cultivation of Li, and it refers to the Four Elements and the Tao mind where the body of Li is manifested. Since Li at this time is Taiji, the principle of heaven is immanent in the mind, so respect and reflection can be established as preconditions at the time of Yifa. It is the position that in the process of expressing human nature and giving it as emotions, if you practice the Reverence( ) and cultivate 敬repeatedly, you will not be darkened in heavenly principles and letting go of desires. The mind of a person who possesses the Middle(中) as the Reverence is harmonized with the heavenly principle, leaving no traces, so the mind acquires the right. To become a bright mirror or still water cannot be achieved with a one-time posture of the Reverence. When you are quiet, you are immersed in the true nature of the heavenly principle, and when you are active, you must cut off your greed at the beginning. In this way, truthfulness builds up, and by working hard over a long period of time, it becomes pure and familiar. If the Li of life inherent in the individual is well preserved and nurtured so that it shines brightly like a mirror and as calm as water, the original body of the individual is always clear and can be radiated without being refracted in all circumstances. Neoliberalism, penetrating even the microscopic realms of our lives, constitutes all areas of the world as a competitive space that needs to be organized like a market. It also demands that citizens be independent and competitive entrepreneurs and emphasizes responsibility for themselves. Neoliberalism institutionally encourages human desires, leading to greed in the space of competition. In order to make a structure that desires the other’s desire and to follow the desire, there is a possibility that it may spread beyond the basic human needs. In the name of neoliberalism, we are driven into infinite competition, and the pressure of competition sometimes disrupts our smooth daily life. One of the causes of the rapid increase in diseases such as neurosis, lethargy, burnout, and panic disorder is the tension in this sense of competition. If these tensions are not controlled, social conflicts are induced. Lee Hwang intends to complete the Neo-Confucian system through practice. The practice is to achieve and acquire the Recognition of Heavenly Principle in Depth(天理体認) through inner cultivation, and this is shown as the Weifa method of practice. Through the Weifa practice, greed is removed, the existence of Li is discovered, and the true self is completed. It seems that Lee Hwang’s Weifa practice will be a way to resolve the social conflicts prevalent in our society.
