Calais is a city fraught with the memories of numerous scenes and events that took place during the Hundred Years’ War. Among them, the famous episode about ‘The Bourgeoisie of Calais’ is literally just a legend from the dramatizations of chroniclers such as Jean Le Bel and Jean Froissart, but it symbolizes the new fate of Calais transformed into an English city in French soil. As the key and bridgehead into France, Calais needed a financial base to maintain its role as a permanent outpost within the enemy state. The garrison, permanently stationed at Calais, laid an enormous burden on the royal finances. The wool staples and merchants’ company established at Calais in 1363 were a win-win situation for the city’s long-standing military base. These developments allowed Calais to play a more important role as a trading base than its original military base. As Jean Favier puts it, “England begets the prosperity of Bordeaux, but Calais begets the prosperity of England.” This article attempts to examine the dual aspect of Calais, which met its new fate as a city of the military-commercial complex at the forefront of the two kingdoms.
