The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of maladaptive personality traits and psychological adjustment, and the role of psychological flexibility in between. Analyzing data from 226 adults, first, maladaptive personality traits, negative affectivity, detachment and disinhibition, in order, showed significant correlations with psychological flexibility and psychological adjustment. Second, psychological flexibility mediated maladaptive personality traits and mental health problems. Third, though psychological flexibility failed to moderate the relationship between maladaptive personality traits and subjective well-being, however, we found that psychological flexibility had a significant moderating effect in the group that has shown a level of +1 standard deviation high maladaptive personality traits. This study implies that intervention using psychological flexibility would be effective as a treatment mechanism to alleviate mental health problems and can be developed as a resource for promoting subjective well-being for those with maladaptive personality traits. In addition, it is suggested that the severity level of the personality pathology dimension should also be considered in relation to psychological adjustment.

본 연구의 목적은 병리적 성격특질과 심리적 적응의 관계와 이 관계에서 심리적 유연성의 역 할을 검증하는 것이었으며, 이를 위해 성인 226명의 자료로 결과를 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 첫째, 병리적 성격특질, 부정적 정서성, 애착상실, 탈억제 순으로 심리적 유연성 및 심리적 적 응 지표들과 유의한 상관관계를 보였다. 둘째, 병리적 성격특질과 정신건강 문제의 관계에서 심리적 유연성은 유의한 매개효과를 나타냈다. 셋째, 병리적 성격특질과 주관적 안녕감의 관 계에서 심리적 유연성은 유의한 조절효과를 나타내지 못하였는데, 병리적 성격특질 수준이 상위 1 표준편차에 해당하는 집단에서는 심리적 유연성이 유의한 조절효과가 나타났음을 확 인했다. 본 연구를 통해 심리적 유연성을 이용한 개입이 병리적 성격 특질을 가진 사람들의 정신건강 문제를 완화하는 효과적인 치료적 기제로 사용될 수 있을 뿐 아니라 주관적 안녕감 증진을 위한 자원으로 계발될 수 있음을 제안할 수 있다. 또한 심리적 적응과 관련하여 성격 병리 차원의 심각도 수준 역시 고려되어야 함이 시사된다.
