In Byzantine art the 6th century manuscripts are beautiful and descriptive. The Rossano Gospels is a 6th-century illuminated manuscript Gospel Book written following the reconquest of the Italian peninsula by the Byzantine Empire. This paper looks at the archetype of icon of Christ in Byzantine art and examines how the iconography of Christ in the Codex Purpreus Rossanensis. It is now proven that the manuscript shifts across different regions and ages, whose stylistic variations are informed by an interplay between monastery, scribe and painter. Therfore, the characteristics of the Codex Purpreus Rossanensis were examined by comparing them with the Codex Sinopensis, Codex Rabulensis, and Vienna Genesis, produced at the same time as the Codex Purpreus Rossanensis. In the study, what kind of function the image of Christ has, and the change of the iconography of Christ according to that function will be found.

비잔틴 미술에서 6세기 필사본들은 아름답고 묘사가 뛰어나다. 로사노 복음서는 비잔틴 제국이 이탈리아를 재정복한 이후 쓰인 6세기 필사본이다. 본 연구는 비잔틴 미술에서 그리스도 도상의 원형 을 살펴본 후, 로사노 복음서에서 어떻게 그리스도 도상이 변화되었는가를 고찰하였다. 필사본은 시대와 지역에 따라 차이를 드러낸다. 수도원과 필사가, 화가에 따라 새로운 조형언어를 형성한다. 따라서 로사노 복음서와 동시대 제작된 시노페 복음서, 라불라 복음서, 빈 창세기와 비교하면서 로사노 복음서의 특징을 살폈다. 본 연구에서 그리스도의 이미지가 어떠한 기능을 가지며, 그리고 그 기능에 따른 그리스도 도상의 변화를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
