Painting media inevitably affect the painter’s decision on their use of composition and style in paintings because media are related to the ways and spaces in which paintings are installed and appreciated. From the late Tang to the Northern Song Dynasty of China, the early landscape painting had also been developed in a close relationship with painting media. Walls being at the center of those media, changes in recognition and use of them as a painting medium influenced the formation of the early landscape painting styles. Focusing on the medium, this paper attempts to clarify that the Chinese landscape paintings had been developed while constantly adjusting the relations with architecture and spaces in their early stages. First, the paper summarizes the works of landscape painters that are recorded in literature up to the Northern Song to show that early landscape painters mostly began their careers as mural painters – architectural decorators. Then, the paper investigates the ways in which early Chinese landscape paintings were produced, installed, and utilized in conjunction with interior and exterior walls. Finally, this paper shows how screens could become the main medium for landscape painting replacing walls while comparing the walls and screens in terms of their function and structure.

당말, 오대 이후로부터 북송까지, 산수화는 그림 매체와 밀접한 관계를 맺으며 발전하였다. 초기 산수화가 그려진 매체의 중심에는 벽과 병풍이 존재하는데, 시대에 따른 이들 매체의 변화는 산수화의 구도와 표현 양식에 변화를 일으킨 원인으로 작용 하였다. 한편, 벽에서 병풍으로 산수화 매체의 전이는 산수화가 설치, 게시되는 공간의 변화를 반영하며 이는 궁극적으로 산수화 제작 목적의 변화를 드러낸다, 즉, 벽과 병풍 이 건축 및 공간과 관계 맺는 방식은 초기 산수화의 전개 논리를 구성하는 주요 요소이 다. 이 부분에 주목함으로써 산수화의 시대적, 지역적 차이와 변화를 실제 산수 형세, 시대 배경, 화가 개인이 처한 상황이나 사상으로 설명해왔던 기존의 해석을 재고하는 근거를 마련할 수 있다. 본 논문은 북송대까지의 산수화가 벽과 병풍을 주요 매체로 하고 있다는 사실에 초점을 맞추어 이 시기까지의 산수화의 제작과 사용상의 특징을 규명함과 동시에 구도 와 양식의 변화 원인을 추적하고자 한다. 북송대까지 화북지역을 중심으로 전개된 산 수화를 ‘초기 화북산수’로 정의하고, 벽과 병풍으로 대변되는 건축적, 공간적 의미의 변 화가 산수화의 전개에 어떻게 작용하고 있는가를 파악하고자 한다. 논문에서는 우선 당말부터 북송까지의 문헌을 중심으로 산수화가들의 작업 내용과 방식을 정리하여 이 로부터 초기 산수화가들이 건축 장엄가로 활동한 사실을 밝혀낸다. 다음으로는 초기 산수화가 제작, 설치, 활용된 양상들을 살펴 산수화가 건축과 밀접하게 연관되는지를 살펴본다. 본 논문은 산수화가 건축 장엄화로 탄생하여 건축과의 관계를 끊임없이 재 설정하며 변화해갔음을 보이고, 산수화의 전개과정을 통해 그 변화의 결과를 이해하는 새로운 관점을 제시한다.
