This study analyzed and discussed the meaning of activity through 'Great Books'. Of the 102 topics covered by ‘Great Books’, the role of activity was analyzed through books in the topic ‘Learning from teachers and books: the role of experience’ and based on this, the meaning of activity to school class was discussed. The study results showed that the roles of activity were 28: these are largely divided into two aspects in terms of the relevance of activity and learning, one in which activity acts comprehensively in learning and the other in which activity is visible in learning. Based on the roles of the activity seen as 'Great Books', the meaning of activity in today's school class is as follows. The first meaning is that activity allows class to meet in advance. The activity in the class is meaningful as it is treated as the basis for making it possible for students to continue learning in the future, even if it could not produce any results right now. The second meaning is that activity exchanges life and class. The exchange of life and class means that activity is treated as a dimension of re-experience in school class. In class, it is meaningful in that students ultimately improve learning and life through activities by re-experiencing life as a class through activities and re-experiencing what they have experienced in class as a living.

본 연구는 ‘위대한 저서’를 통하여 활동의 의미를 분석하여 논의하였다. ‘위대한 저서’가 다룬 102개의 주제 중 ‘교사나 책이 아닌 경험이 학습에서 하는 역 할’(Learning apart from teachers and books: the role of experience) 항의 저서들을 통해서 활 동의 역할을 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 활동이 학교 수업에 주는 의미를 논의하였다. 연구 결과, 활동의 역할을 28가지로 분석할 수 있었다. 이는 활동과 학습의 관련성 측면에 서 크게 2가지, 하나는 활동이 학습에 포괄적으로 작용하는 측면과 다른 하나는 활동이 학습 에서 가시적으로 드러나는 측면으로 기술하였다. ‘위대한 저서’로 본 이러한 활동의 역할을 바탕으로, 활동이 오늘날 학교 수업에 주는 의미 를 다음과 같이 논의하였다. 첫 번째 의미는 활동이 수업을 미리 만나게 해준다는 것이다. 수 업에서 활동은 지금 당장 어떤 결과를 내지 못하더라도 앞으로 계속될 학생의 배움을 가능하 게 만드는 바탕으로 다루는 의미가 있었다. 두 번째 의미는 활동이 생활과 수업을 교환해 준다는 것이다. 활동이 생활과 수업을 교환 한다는 것은 활동이 학교 수업에서 재경험의 차원으로 다루어지는 것을 뜻한다. 수업에서 학 생은 활동을 통해 생활을 수업으로 재경험하며 또한 수업에서 겪은 것을 생활로 재경험함으 로써 궁극적으로 활동을 통하여 학습과 삶을 개선하도록 한다는 점에서 의미가 있었다.
