A growing number of Korean learners want to learn Korean and have expertise such as interpreters and translators. In this regard, there has been a need for Korean translation education. Various issues in Korean translation education have been discussed, but most of them were conducted on non-English speaking learners. According to Education Ministry's statistics, however, the number of English-speaking learners, domestic undergraduate and graduates is not as high as the number of Chinese-speaking learners but is steadily increasing over the past three years. This means systematic Korean translation teaching methods for English-speaking learners are also needed. For studies of English-speaking Korean learners, Lee (2019), Oh (2017), Baek (2016), and Ahn (2012), etc. analyzed errors in free Korean writing, and there was no research on translation errors to our knowledge. In addition, there were more studies focusing on overall Korean writing education than on error studies in translation. The present study predicts what errors may occur in translation of English-speaking learners through sample surveys and shows that types of errors can be different from those of free writings. Furthermore, the study shows the need for larger scale translation error analysis, and briefly suggests teaching methods for error correction. In this study, we collected errors made by advanced English-speaking learners in English-Korean translation. We selected the source texts that enable us to find various types of translation errors on different levels of language: the source texts included complex sentences, collocations, ambiguous words, written/colloquial style, etc. In the data collected, we found not only the errors that have previously been discussed on general writing tasks (e.g. word choice, collocation errors, etc.) but also the errors that have not been discussed in the literature. The new type of errors include the errors caused by the different ways of thinking in English and Korean and the errors at the discourse level.
