This study investigates the current use of works of interpretation and presents the direction that the discussions on interpreters’ copyrights should take. Under South Korea’s copyright laws, conference interpreters have the right to publish, reproduce, and transmit their works of interpretation, and create secondary works out of such works. The survey subjecting the graduate students of interpretation and translation found that most respondents had the experience of listening to actual interpretation through various media. However, their use of interpreted works was limited to such one-time listening, indicating that works of interpretation have not been frequently reused primarily due to their availability. This study concludes that the discussions on interpreters’ copyrights should be accompanied by the efforts to facilitate the reuse of works of interpretation. Without such efforts, any move to strengthen protection of interpreters’ copyrights, especially economic rights, might be seen as a selfish endeavor by interpreters to promote their self-interest in the ignorance of benefits to the society as a whole.
