Since the coined word “public design” was coined in 2005, public design has shown the achievements of numerous policies, projects, and research. However, the record of changes in Korean public design over the past 15 years is not clear, and the systematic management of information in fragmentary forms such as participation in individual projects or research results of some researchers is required. In addition, chronological records and organized historical records are very important for those in charge of entering the public design field for the first time or starting work in the administrative and business fields. In this study, the meaning of the project is arranged in chronological order as much as possible, from the inception of public design in 2005 to the present, major events such as policies and major projects, the promotion of legal systems and the birth of the Public Design Act, and public design promotion plans and surveys and performance, limitations and problems were analyzed. As a result of this study, the history of public design in Korea was divided into four periods: 'birth period', 'diffusion period', 'act introduction period', and 'early promotion period', and the characteristic contents of each period were summarized. Through this, not only will it be possible to provide a basis for historical research in the field of public design in the future, but it will also be possible to provide a theoretical foundation for related research fields by organizing and providing scattered individual events and records in an academic frame.

2005년 공공디자인이라는 신조어가 만들어진 후 현재까지 공공디자인은 수많은 정책과 사업, 연구의 성과들을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 한국 공공디자인의 15년간 변화에 대한 기록은 명확하지 않으며, 개별적인 사업에의 참여 또는 몇몇 연구자들의 연구성 과들과 같은 파편적 형태로 정보의 체계적 관리가 필요한 시점에 이르고 있다. 또한 공공디자인 학문분야에 처음 입문하거나 행정분야, 사업분야의 업무를 시작하는 담당자에게도 연대기적 기록과 정리된 역사적 기록은 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 2005 년 공공디자인의 태동부터 현재까지 추진되어진 정책과 주요사업, 법제도의 추진 및 공공디자인법의 탄생, 공공디자인 진흥계획 과 실태조사 등 주요한 사건을 가급적 연대기 순으로 정리하면서 사업의 의미와 성과, 한계와 문제 등을 분석하였다. 이를 통 해 연구의 결과 한국 공공디자인의 역사를 ‘태동기’, ‘확산기’, ‘제도 도입기’, ‘진흥 초기’의 네 가지 시기로 구분하고 각 시기의 특징적 내용들을 정리하였다. 이를 통해 향후 공공디자인 학문분야에서 역사 연구의 기초를 제공할 뿐 아니라, 흩어져 있는 개 별 사건과 기록들을 학문적 틀로 정리해 제공함으로써 관련 연구 분야의 이론적 토대를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
