This study examined the developmental patterns and orientation of the Buddhist magazine, the "Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea" (Total 22 volumes, March 1917∼January 1921). The “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea” is a paper published by the 30 axis temples association office, and is the only Buddhist magazine in the period before and after the 3.1(March 1st) Movement. The “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea” started with direct and indirect connections with the Buddhist advocacy group (佛敎擁護會), which pro‐Imperial Japanese people were in charge of, but in the latter half of the magazine, as it launched the Joseon Buddhist Association (朝鮮佛敎會) and Buddhism Youth Association (佛敎靑年會), which included many Buddhist intellectuals at that time, it is notable that it became the birthplace of the new Buddhist movement. Here, it can be evaluated that the activities of cultural practice movements that were spontaneous in the Buddhist world after the 3.1 Movement were expressed through the magazine. The “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea” is basically an academic liberal arts magazine that accumulated academic research results of Buddhist intellectuals centering on Lee Neung‐hwa. This study considered the orientation of the magazine as the first research on this magazine, focusing on contemporary opinions (時論), before examining academic achievements. Contemporary opinions revealed intact the political actions of the magazine publisher and the chairman of the association office. The conservative and reactionary voice contained in contemporary opinions is linked to the composition of the magazine itself and the conservatism of the style. This is the limit of Lee Neung‐hwa's conservative cultural perception and sense, and is the result of the oppression of the times at the same time. In the “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea”, the different perspectives of professor Park Han‐yeong of Jungang Hakrim who viewed Buddhism of the period and Buddhist students who returned from Imperial Japan studying abroad are exposed intact. New people from studying abroad, such as Kim Jeong‐hae, raised a new perspective on religions, and a new voice began, such as pointing out the problems of the 30 axis temples (三十本山) system based on the temple decree (寺刹令) established by the government‐general. Accordingly, in the latter half of the “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea”, the voices of Buddhist people who returned from Imperial Japan studying abroad occupied a greater proportion. Through this, it was revealed that the “Journal of Joseon Buddhism Collectanea” is a complex text that reflects various characteristics, limitations, and possibilities of the times faced by the Buddhist world in Joseon (Korea) between 1917 and 1921.

『조선불교총보(朝鮮佛敎叢報)』(총22호, 1917.3∼1921.1)는 삼십본산연합사무소에서 발행한 기관지로, 3.1운동 직전에 종간한 만해의 『유심』을 제외하면, 3.1운동 전후에 걸쳐 간행된 유일한 불교계 잡지다. 이 잡지는 친일인사들이 포진한 불교옹호회(佛敎 擁護會)와 직간접적인 관련을 맺으며 출발했으나, 잡지의 후반기에 당시 신진 불교 지식인이 다수 포함된 조선불교회(朝鮮佛敎會)와 불교청년회(佛敎靑年會) 소식에 지면을 할애하면서 새로운 불교운동의 모태가 된 점은 특기할 만하다. 여기에는 3.1운 동 이후 불교계에서 자생한 문화적 실천운동의 움직임이 잡지를 통해 표출된 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 『조선불교총보』는 기본적으로 이능화를 중심으로 한 불교 지성인들의 학술 연구 결과가 축적된 학술적 교양 잡지다. 본고는, 학술적 성과를 고찰하기 전에, 이 잡지 에 대한 최초의 연구로서 잡지의 지향성을 시론(時論)을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 시론 에는 잡지 발행인과 연합사무소 위원장의 정치 행보가 고스란히 드러나 있는데, 여기에 담긴 그들의 보수적이고 반동적 목소리는 잡지 자체의 구성과 문체의 보수성으 로 이어진다. 이는 이능화의 보수적인 문화 인식, 감각의 한계이며, 시대의 억압이 동시에 작용한 결과다. 『조선불교총보』에는 그 시대의 불교학을 바라보는 중앙학림 교수 박한영과 일본 유학생들의 상이한 시각이 고스란히 노출되어 있다. 김정해 등 신진 유학생들은 종 교에 대한 새로운 관점을 제기하고 총독부가 제정한 사찰령(寺刹令)에 근거한 삼십 본산(三十本山) 제도의 문제점을 지적하는 등 새로운 목소리를 내기 시작하였다. 이 에 따라 『조선불교총보』의 후반기에는 일본에서 귀국한 불교유학생의 목소리가 더 큰 비중을 차지하게 된다. 『조선불교총보』는 1917∼1921년 사이 한국의 불교계가 처한 시대의 특징과 한계, 그리고 가능성이 복합적으로 반영된 텍스트라 평가할 수 있다.
