This paper aims to define a category of verbs in modern Korean language which linguistically describes and expresses wishes. A wish is a verbal expression of one’s desire or hopes. In every language, linguistic formats to convey wishes are realized in various ways. In Korean, wish verbs are in the form of words that play a pivotal role in completing the sentence to which they belong. As they can be regarded as among the most direct linguistic methods to express and reveal the content of wishes, it is important to conduct a systematic research on wish verbs in Korean. Wishing is an abstract deed that occurs inside someone’s consciousness. In this regard, wish verbs have been categorized in prior research as a sub-category of psychological verbs as they describe an internal deed. Some researchers have focused on the fact that the content of a wish is found as a state in a complementation clause, discussing wish verbs in studies of prepositional verbs or complementation. However, as those approaches have a limitation in understanding the characteristics of wish verbs, this paper aims to define a category of wish verbs in Korean by analyzing their characteristics and investigating differences from other verbs. Against this backdrop, this paper describes the concept of wish verbs as verbs that directly describe a behavior of agent who inwardly waits for an object. Based on the definition, this research establishes a criterion for defining wish verbs by analyzing the characteristics of agent, object, and inward deed. Finally, this research suggests a list of wish verbs from entry words introduced in the Standard Korean Language Dictionary.

본고에서는 ‘기원(祈願, wish)’을 언어적으로 서술하여 표현하는 현대 한국어 기원동사의 범주를 규정하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. ‘기원’은 ‘바람(wish)’의 언어적 표현으로 이러한 ‘바람(wish)’을 표현하는 언어적 형식이 모든 언어에서 여러 가지 수단을 통해 다양하게 이루어지지만, 어휘 형태인 한국어 기원동사는 이 중에서 문장을 이루는 핵심요소로 가장 직접적으로 기원의 내용을 표현하고 밝히는 언어적 수단이라고 할 수 있으므로 기원동사를 체계적으로 연구할 필요가 있다. ‘기원’은 마음속에서 의식적으로 일어나는 추상적인 행위이므로, 기원동사에 대한 연구는 ‘내적 행위’를 서술한다는 점에서 심리동사의 하위 부류나 기원의 내용이 하나의 사태로 보문절로 드러난다는 점에서 명제동사나 보문 연구에서 다루어졌으나 기원동사 자체로서의 특성을 분석하는 것으로는 한계가 있으므로 기원동사의 특성을 분석하여 여타 동사들과 구별되는 한국어 기원동사의 범주를 규정하고자 하였다. 따라서 본고에서는 ‘기원’의 의미 영역에 대한 고찰을 통해 기원동사의 개념을 ‘기원 주체가 기원 대상을 마음속으로 기다리는 행위를 직접적으로 서술하는 동사’로 정의하였고, 이를 토대로 하여 기원동사가 서술하는 내용인 ‘기원 주체’와 ‘기원 대상’, 그리고 ‘내적 행위’의 특성을 분석하여 기원동사의 판정 기준을 마련하였으며, 이에 근거하여 「표준국어대사전」의 표제어를 대상으로 하여 한국어 기원동사의 어휘 목록을 제시하였다.
