The purpose of this study was to investigate aspects of how physical education (PE) teachers and pupils understand gender equality in physical education lessons. A total of 307 PE teachers and 718 pupils completed an online-based questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis was undertaken in order to meet the content validity of the questionnaire. Unpaired t-test and variance analysis were employed. The main findings were: first, the level of teachers’ awareness on the gender equality varied in different sex, age and school class. Second, while an inverse relationship was discovered between the level of primary school female teachers’ awareness on the gender equality and age, a proportional relationship emerged in secondary school female teachers. Third, the level of boys’ awareness on the gender equality was lower than girls. Exploring the process of how both teachers and pupils develop awareness on the gender equality, and the development of a program for raising the level of PE teachers’ awareness in the gender equality were suggested as follow-up studies.

본 연구의 목적은 교사와 학생이 체육수업에서 나타나는 양성평등을 인식하는 양상과 그 차이를 탐색하는 데 있다. 340명의 교사와 718명의 학생이 온라인 기반 설문에 참여하였다. 개발된 설문 문 항은 확인적 요인분석을 통해 내용 타당도를 검증하였다. 수집된 설문 응답은 독립표본 t-검정과 분 산분석으로 배경변인에 따른 차이를 분석하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 남교사가 여 교사보다, 연령이 높을수록, 체육교사가 초등교사보다 양성평등 인식 수준이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 초등학교 여교사는 연령대가 높을수록 양성평등 인식 수준이 낮은 반면, 중등학교 여교사는 연령대가 높아질수록 양성평등 인식 수준이 높았다. 셋째, 여학생이 남학생보다, 초등학생이 중학생 보다 양성평등 인식 수준이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이를 바탕으로 교사와 학생의 양성평등에 대한 인식 과정 탐색과 체육교사 양성평등 인식 제고 프로그램 개발을 후속연구로 제안하였다.
