This study elucidates how Korean historians understood the term "Theory of commodity-money economy" as it relates to the their field. The term has been widely used incorrectly in the literature. Even High school student textbooks have incorporated this term without fully understanding its meaning. Originally this term came from Karl Marx's study. According to Karl Marx, the more frequently people sell a commodity , the more they feel a deficiency in the medium of exchange as time passes. He was trying to explain how the use of money increased based on the above idea. Therefore, commodity exchanges are a sufficient condition for producing a monetary increase for pre-modern societies. From this background, historians sought to apply currency usage to explain pre-modern society's economic conditions. From Karl Marx' perspective currency is a kind of criteria which reflects the level of a specific society's economic condition. This is why Korean historians have focused on the relationship between commodities and money. However, the function of the premodern currency was extremely different from that of modern society. Usually currency was made and circulated for fiscal purposes. In this study I examine and demonstrate the right usage and meaning of the term "Theory of Commodity-Money Economy"

‘상품 화폐경제’라는 용어는 조선후기 사회를 규정하는 역사용어로 전문역사서에서부터 교과 서에이르기까지 널리 사용되고 있다. 그러나 널리 사용하는 대중성이 있는 역사용어임에도 용어의 의미에 대해서는 명확히 규정되지 않은 채 활용되고 있다. 의미를 추정하기 위해 우선 연구서와 교 과서의 ‘상품 화폐경제’라는 소제목에 포함된 내역을 확인해보면 농업의 발전과 잉여생산물의 증 가 그리고 장시의 발달부터 신분제의 해체까지 매우 광범위한 주제를 포함시키고 있음을 알 수 있 다. 본래 ‘상품 화폐경제’는 상품이 거래되면서 거래의 불편함을 해결하기 위해 거래수단으로 화 폐를 필요로하는 관계 속에서 나타난 특정한 경제구조를 말한다. 이는 화폐의 교환수단이라는 기 능에 주목한 것이다. 따라서 상품과 화폐의 등장을 연결시키는 경제구조 속에서 화폐의 등장은 교 환의 증가의 결과물로 간주했고 전근대 경제발전 단계를 확인할 수 있는 용어로 ‘상품 화폐경제’ 는 활용되었다. 그러나 화폐는 교환수단 외에도 여러 기능을 담당한다. 특히 전근대 사회에서 화 폐는 재정수단으로 흉년에 곡식을 확보하기 위한 수단으로도 활용되고 있다. 전근대 화폐는 빈번 한 교환의 결과물이 아닌 정부의 재정정책에 따라 나타나는 수단의 하나로 성격규정을 할 수 있 다. 이는 호조의 『탁지전부고』에 나타난 지출내역을 통해서도 명확히 드러나고 있다. 따라서 조 선후기 경제를 상품교환과 그 빈번함의 결과로 화폐가 나타난다는 구조 속에서 파악하는 ‘상품 화폐경제’라는 도식은 조선후기 경제와 사회구조를 이해하는 적절한 틀이 될 수 없다고 본다. 당 대를 이해하는 새로운 구조를 당대의 시각에서 파악하여 온전한 경제구조를 확인할 필요가 있다.
