This paper surveyed the extension and cultural causes of Printing technology of premodern East Asian four countries. While Printing is divided into woodblook printing and movable printing, I concentrated on the bilateral relationship. The aim of Printing lies in the massive duplication of text. In East Asia, woodblock printing was responsible for this charge. Difficulty of Chinese character, the wookblock merit in carving calligraphy and that of massive printing were cited as the main causes. China, Vietnam and Japan mainly printed books making use of woodblock printing. Movable printing was used for the special purpose. On the other hand, Korea developed the woodblock printing and movable printing simultaneously and continuedly. I found out the power stimulating East Asia Printing technology was the particular thinking system of Mahayana Buddhism. Mahayana Buddhism emphasized on believing Mahayana Sutras. So they say that we should spread out Sutras with the method of holding, recitating and writing. This particular thinking system flowed into China and invented Printing technology with the help of former Chinese technologies.

본 논문에서는 전근대기 동아시아 4국 인쇄술의 보급 과정과 문화 동 인을 살펴보았다. 인쇄술은 크게 목판 인쇄술과 활자 인쇄술로 나눌 수 있는데, 이 양자의 관계에 초점을 맞췄다. 인쇄의 목적은 텍스트의 다량 복제다. 동아시아에서는 이러한 역할을 주로 목판이 담당했다. 이러한 동아시아 목판 인쇄 우위에 대해서는 표기 문자 상의 난점, 서예의 특징 을 살리는 데 있어서의 목판의 장점, 다량 인쇄에 적합한 목판의 장점 등이 이유로 제시되었다. 중국, 베트남, 일본은 주로 목판 인쇄술을 이용하여 책을 찍어냈다. 활 자 인쇄술은 일부 책에 혹은 특정 시기에만 사용되었다. 그러나 한국에 서는 특이하게도 목판 인쇄술과 활자 인쇄술이 동시에 그리고 지속적으 로 발전해왔다. 이러한 동아시아 인쇄술을 추동해낸 힘을 대승불교의 독특한 사유 체계에서 찾았다. 대승불교는 부처의 말이라고 정당화된 대승경전들을 믿으라고 강조한다. 그래서 그 경전들을 수지(受持), 독송(讀誦), 서사 (書寫)하여 부처의 말씀을 널리 전파하라고 말한다. 이러한 사상이 중 국에 들어오면서 중국 전래의 여러 기술들을 만나 인쇄술을 창안해내 게 된 것이다.
