Objectives This study analyzed the framing of news reports about obesity in daily newspapers in South Korea. A content analysis was conducted based on framing with the Health Belief Model. Methods A total of 431 articles in four major daily newspapers published from October 2017 to September 2019 were analyzed. Results Five HBM constructs - perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action - based on the Health Belief Model, were applied in the analysis. In the analyzed newspaper articles, the most frequently appearing construct was internal cues to action, followed by perceived susceptibility and perceived severity. However, other relatively few instances of constructs, including external cues to action, perceived benefits, and barriers, were found. Conclusions Korean newspapers need to increase the amount of framing with external cues to action, perceived benefits, and barriers in their articles to facilitate the national public policy of reducing obesity.

배경 및 목적 이 연구의 목적은 한국적 상황에서 비만 이슈에 대한 미디어 뉴스 프레임을 분석하고, 국내 미디어들이 비만 이슈에 대한 사회적 담론을 어떻게 제시하고 있는지, 실제 비만 예방 행동과 문제 해결에 유용한 정보 를 전달하고 있는지 살펴보는 데 있다. 방법 수용자들의 건강 예방 행동에 대한 설명을 위해 건강 신념 모델에 기반한 미디어 프레임 분석 틀을 적용하 여 2017년부터 2019년까지 게재된 국내 주요 일간지 네 종의 총 431개 뉴스 기사를 분석 대상으로 하였 다. 건강 신념 모델의 다섯 개 구성 요소에 근거해 미디어 프레임 내용 분석을 실시하였다. 결과 가장 빈번하게 나타난 구성 요소는 비만 예방과 치료를 위한 내적 행동 계기였고, 그 다음으로 비만에 대한 지각된 민감성과 지각된 심각성 순으로 나타났다. 하지만, 비만 예방과 치료를 위한 외적 행동 계기, 지각 된 이익, 지각된 장애 요인 등의 구성 요소들은 상대적으로 적게 나타났다. 논의 및 결론 국내 미디어들은 향후 비만에 대한 뉴스 보도와 관련해 비만 예방과 치료를 위한 적극적 행동 계기, 지각된 이익, 지각된 장애와 해소 요인에 대한 프레임 정보 제공을 늘림으로써, 한국 사회의 비만 문제 해결과 수용자들의 비만 예방 행동 촉진을 위한 실질적인 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
