This paper considers the meaning of the Japanese phasal verb V-hajimeru which represents the beginning phases of events, and the meaning of V-hajimeteiru which is the continuative aspect. V-hajimeru has the semantic feature that movement or change of state has begun and continues for a while. Since V-hajimeru belongs to the change of state verbs, -teiru form in V-hajimeteiru is supposed to indicate the aspect of continuative phase of a state. But -teiru form in V-hajimeteiru represents the aspect of maintaining the beginning phases of events, which means that the movement or change of state has begun and continues. It is also analyzed that -teiru form in V-hajimeteiru represents active process not the static state. This can be confirmed by the fact that V-hajimeteiru can be modified by the adverb that express the process of movement or change of state. V-hajimeteiru can also represents the perfect aspect(actional perfect), and it represents the similar aspect as the continuative aspect. In short, both indicate that movement or change of state has begun prior to reference time, and still continues at reference time. This is due to the lack of perfection which is an important element of the perfect aspect.

본 연구에서는 개시를 나타내는 아스펙트 형식 「V-はじめる」의 의미를 파악하고 그 의미를 토대로 계속상 「V-はじめている」의 의미에 대하여 고찰하였다. 「V-はじ める」는 운동의 개시를 나타내며 개시 이후의 일정 기간 동안 운동이 지속됨을 의 미적으로 내포한다. 「V-はじめる」는 변화동사에 속하므로 「ている」가 접속 하면 결 과계속을 나타내는 것이 일반적이나 「V-はじめる」가 나타내는 지속성이라는 의미 적 특징으로 인하여 「V-はじめている」에 있어서 「ている」는 결과유지라는 의미적 특징을 나타내게 됨을 주장하였다. 여기서 결과유지란 운동이 시작되고 그 운동이 계속되는 것을 말하며 이러한 결과유지의 상태는 정적인 상태가 아닌 동적 과정의 성격을 띤다. 「V-はじめている」는 운동이 이루어지는 장소명사구와 운동의 과정을 나타내는 부사구의 수식을 받는다는 구문적 특징이 관찰되며 이러한 구문적 특징을 통해 「V-はじめている」의 의미적 특징을 확인하였다. 또한 계속상 결과유지를 나타 내는 「V-はじめている」와 완료상을 나타내는 「V-はじめている」는 각각 기준시점과 설정시점 이전에 개시된 운동이 기준시점과 설정시점에도 계속되고 있음을 나타낸 다고 하는 점에서 결과적으로 동일한 국면을 나타내게 됨을 밝혔다. 그리고 이러한 현상은 완료상 「V-はじめている」에 완료상의 3가지 요소인 ‘선행성’, ‘완성성’, ‘효 력’ 중 ‘완성성’이 결여되어 있기 때문임을 설명하였다.
