Because of job characteristics, kindergarten teachers experienced a great deal of stress and therefore mental health problems. Mental health problems of kindergarten teachers have negative influence on young children’s development as well as teacher themselves. For this reason, many researchers have persistently investigated variables that influence mental health of kindergarten teachers. Along the same line, this study investigated relationships between job stress and mental health and mediating effect of job stress coping strategies on the relationship between job stress and mental health of kindergarten teachers. Three hundred kindergarten teachers in Pusan participated in this study. Collected data were analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation analysis and Hayes’ PORCESS Macro. Major findings of this study were as follows: First job stress was negatively related to support pursuit centered coping strategy, positively related to avoidance centered coping strategy and not related to problem solving centered coping strategy. Job stress was positively related to mental health. Mental health was not significantly related to problem solving centered coping strategy, negatively related to support pursuit centered coping strategy and positively related to avoidance centered coping strategy. Second, support pursuit centered coping strategy and avoidance centered coping strategy mediated the relationship between job stress and mental health, but problem centered coping strategy did not. This study is significant in terms of investigating mediating effect of job stress coping strategies on the relationship between job stress and mental health of kindergarten teachers which has been remained unclear.

유치원 교사는 직무특성 때문에 많은 스트레스를 경험하고 이로 인해 정신건강 문 제를 겪을 수 있다. 유치원 교사의 정신건강 문제는 교사 자신은 물론 유아들의 발달에도 부정적인 영향을 미친다. 이러한 이유로 유치원 교사의 정신건강에 영향을 미치는 변인 에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 진행되어왔다. 본 연구는 이러한 연구의 연장선상에서 유치 원교사의 직무스트레스와 정신건강의 관계와 이들 두 변인의 관계에서 직무스트레스 대 처전략의 매개효과를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 본 연구를 위해 부산광역시에 소재하고 있는 사립 유치원의 교사 300명이 본 연구에 참여하였다. 이들로부터 수집된 자료는 Pearson의 적률상관분석과 Hayes의 PROCESS macro를 사용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 직무스트레스는 지지중심 대처전략과는 부적 상관을 회피중심 대처전략과는 정적 상관을 보였으나, 문제해결 중심 대처전략과는 유 의미한 상관이 없었다. 직무스트레스와 정신건강은 정적 상관, 문제해결 중심 대처전략 과 정신건강은 상관이 없었으며, 지지추구 중심 대처전략과 정신건강은 부적 상관, 회피 중심 대처와 정신건강은 정적 상관이 있었다. 둘째, 유치원교사의 직무스트레스와 정신 건강의 관계에서 직무스트레스 대처전략 중 지지추구 중심 대처전략과 회피 중심 대처 전략은 부분 매개효과를 보였으나 문제해결 중심 대처전략은 매개효과가 없었다. 이러 한 연구 결과는 유치원 교사의 정신건강과 관련하여 직무스트레스를 감소시킬 수 있는 방안을 마련하는 것이 중요함을 시사해준다. 본 연구의 결과는 또한 만약 현실적인 이유 로 이것이 불가능하거나 어렵다면 이들의 직무스트레스 대처전략을 점검해 보고 필요한 경우 이들의 대처 전략에 대한 상담이나 교육을 실시하는 것이 이들의 정신건강 향상에 도움이 될 수 있음을 시사해 준다. 본 연구는 이 분야의 선행연구에서 충분히 검토하지 못 했던 유치원교사의 직무스트레스와 정신건강의 관계에서 직무스트레스 대처전략의 매 개효과를 밝혔다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
