Providing air quality information through mobile app has become one of the major information sources for judging air quality thus effective delivery of information is important to protect people from air pollution. This study examines the effect of mobile nudges on air pollution avoidance behavior in terms of public transportation ridership. By analyzing four years of air quality and metro ridership data from Seoul, Korea, we find that mobile nudges help information delivery and promote air pollution avoidance behavior. Our results further demonstrate that the effect of mobile nudges can be varied by schedule flexibility and travel purposes. This study provides implications for policymakers to efficiently nudge the public through mobile devices to protect themselves while allowing individuals the freedom to make their own choices.
