Cannibalization or Inverse Cannibalization Effect : An Exploratory Study on the Expansion of Online-Based Games to Mobile

초록

영어

The purpose of this study is to analyze the occurrence and extent of the cannibalization phenomenon in the game industry's channel expansion. In this study, the process of rising and declining between PC-based MMORPG online games and mobile games that are in a competitive relationship is explained through the interaction between the two channels. To this end, we use the Lotka-Volterra model to explain the survival of the fittest and the relationship between predators and predators that can occur in an ecosystem. Through the Lotka-Volterra model with asymmetric competition (LVac), we studied the interaction between two channels by MMORPG game provider, finding that the online channel has cannibalized the more recent mobile channel, whose residual market has turned out to be completely accessible to the online channel. At the same time, the mobile channel has been able to exert competition on the online channel through a negative word-of-mouth. The nondimensional representation of the LVac model evidenced that the entrance of the mobile channel implied a delay in the peak time of the mobile channel.
