This paper deals with a historical research regarding the Christian ordination rite in the early Christian church. Especially, this study researches the priesthood and the rites of ordination from the birth of the church to the 6th century, which was regarded as the early Christianity era. This time is the period when the first church community appeared on the earth, grew up confronting against the serious persecutions, became officially recognized by the Roman Empire, and its territories became Christianized, and also the church was institutionally stabilized. Therefore, this study examines the process of the priesthood from its inception to its birth, development, and stable operation. Through the results of this study, I will try to examine what contemporary Protestant churches should apply to. The basic methodology of this study focuses on researching historical documents that dealt with the clergy system and ordination rituals in early Christianity. Since there are not many research results on this subject in Korea yet, I mostly deal with the foreign references as the primary sources of this study, based on the research of Paul F. Bradshaw, a professor of Christian liturgy at Notre Dam University in the United States, who specialized in this field. In researching this paper, I drew the following results: Through the rites of ordination of clergy, early Christian churches theologically promulgated the clergy system to the church, and empowered the authority of ordained ministry, and the congregation formed a community by participating in this ritual, actively. This study examines the theological meaning of the Christian clergy system in Chapter 2, and in Chapter 3 deals with the formation of the early Christian clergy system and the development of ordination rites until the edict of Milan by Constantine I (313 A.D.) through various sources. In Chapter 4, I deal with the development of the clergy system and the changes of the rites of ordination to operate a stable church from the post-edict of Milan to the 6th century. In addition, in Chapter 5, I select some important issues from the rites of ordination in the early Christian churches dealt in Chapters 3 and 4, and apply them to the contemporary Korean Christian church, and I conclude this paper with my opinion.

본 연구는 기독교 성직 안수제도에 관한 역사적 연구이다. 특히, 교회가 생겨난 후 부터 초기 기독교 시대로 분류되는 6세기까지의 성직과 그 임직 의례에 대해 다루고 있다. 이 시기는 처음 교회라는 공동체가 이 땅에 나타나서 심각한 박해를 무릅쓰고 성장하고 로마제국에 의해 공인이 되고 그 영토들이 기독교화되면서 교회가 제도적으 로 안정되는 기간이다. 따라서 본 연구는 이 기간 동안의 성직이란 제도를 그 태동부 터 탄생 그리고 발전과 안정적 운영까지의 과정을 살펴볼 수 있으며 그 결과를 통해 오늘날 개신교회들이 적용해야 할 바를 고찰하려 한다. 본 연구의 기본적인 방법론은 초기 기독교에서 성직제도와 성직 안수의례를 다루 었던 문헌연구가 중심이다. 아직 국내에서는 본 주제를 다룬 연구물이 많지 않기에 외국의 자료들을 많이 참조하였고 특히 이 분야에 관해 전문적인 연구를 했던 미국의 노틀 댐 대학교의 예배학 교수인 Paul F. Bradshaw의 연구들을 참조하여 초기 기독 교의 1차 자료를 사용하여 연구를 진행하였다. 본 논문을 연구하면서 필자는 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다: 초기 기독교회는 성직 임직 의례를 통해 성직을 신학적으로 교회에 공포하고 성직자의 권한을 부여했으며 성도들은 이 의례에 능동적으로 참여함 으로 공동체를 형성하였다. 본 연구는 2장에서 기독교 성직 제도의 신학적 의미를 고 찰하였고 3장에서는 초기 기독교 성직제도의 형성과 임직의례의 발전 가정을 기독교 공인(313 A.D.) 전까지 여러 자료들을 통해 다루었다. 4장에서는 기독교 공인 이후부 터 6세기까지 안정된 교회를 운영하기 위한 성직 제도의 발전과 그 임직 의례의 변화 들을 다루었다. 그리고 5장에서는 3, 4장에서 다루었던 초기 기독교회의 성직 임직 의 례에서 중요한 특징들을 선별하여 현대 한국 기독교회에서 적용해야할 부분들을 다루었고 필자의 결론으로 끝맺었다.
