This article describes the relationship and meaning between subjects who suffered disasters and the literature they created and enjoyed through the martyrdom literature produced during the persecution of Catholics in the late Joseon Dynasty. The series of persecution of Catholics in the late Joseon Dynasty was a kind of social disaster for Catholics, but many Catholics did not avoid it but rather actively chose it. In this process, Catholic literature served as a source of momentum for Catholics to endure the disaster of religious persecution and continue their journey to the new world they wanted. As an example, this article introduced Kim Ki-ryang(金耆良)'s history of encountering Catholicism in foreign lands by chance after the shipwreck. we also looked at how Catholic literature relates to the formation of new values for women through the practice of Catholic faith and martyrdom records of various women. Finally, through the example of Jeong Yak-jong (丁若鍾), we looked at the social and historical significance of the activities of Catholics in the late Joseon Dynasty. The belief of Catholics in the late Joseon Dynasty was based on the universal perception of human religious freedom and mutual equality, so it can be seen that it is still valuable today.

이 글에서는 조선 후기 천주교 박해 시기에 산출된 천주교 문학을 통해 재난을 겪은 주체들과 그들이 창작, 향유한 문학 사이의 관계와 의미를 짚어 보고자 하였 다. 조선 후기에 벌어진 일련의 천주교 박해는 당사자들에게 일종의 사회적 재난이 었으나, 많은 천주교도들이 그 재난을 회피하지 않고 오히려 적극적으로 선택했다 는 점에서 재난을 향한 주체의 자발성을 그 특징적 면모로 지적할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 국면에서 순교자들이 창작하거나 그들을 대상으로 삼은 다양한 ‘순교자 문 학’이 출현하였던바, 이는 당시의 천주교도들이 종교 박해의 재난을 감내하고 나아 가 자신들이 바라던 새로운 세상을 향한 여정을 지속할 수 있는 동력을 제공한 원 천이 되기도 하였다. 이와 같은 예로서 이 글에서는 난파 이후 우연한 계기로 이역땅에서 천주교를 접하게 된 김기량의 이력과 함께 다양한 여성들의 천주교 신앙 실천 및 순교 기록 을 살펴보았으며, 정약종의 예를 통해 조선 후기 천주교도들의 활동이 지니는 사회적, 역사적 의미까지 읽어 보고자 하였다. 물론 조선 후기에 출현한 천주교 문학의 내용과 효용은 그것을 향유하는 사람들의 종교적 구원에 대한 신념과 밀접히 연관 되어 있다는 점에서 일반론의 차원으로 확장하기는 어려운 면이 있겠으나, 그럼에 도 그들의 신념이 인간의 종교적 자유와 상호 평등에 대한 보편적 인식을 기반으로 삼고 있었다는 점에서 제한적인 종교적 지평을 넘어서는 유효한 역사적 의미를 지 닌다고 할 것이다.
