The Velázquez’s Las Meninas attracts many people because of its enigmatic composition. This Baroque-style painting raises many questions: Which moment does it capture? Who is the beautiful girl in the middle? What does the apparent painter want to draw on a giant canvas? Why there are dwarfs? It is widely known that Velázquez’s works are the masterpieces of Spanish baroque painting during 17th century, which not only affected many other painters but also other areas of the arts -Music, Literature, Philosophy, and Psychology. Antonio Buero Vallejo (1916-2000), who is a representative playwright of Spanish realism during the 20th century, infused his theatrical imagination into Las Meninas and presented his work on the stage in 1960; this year marked 300 years since the death of Diego Velázquez. This study, firstly, introduces Diego Velázquez and his painting, Las Meninas. Later, the paper examines Bureo Vallejo’s reflection and his theatrical fantasy on Velázquez. As a result, this paper aims to explain the transition from one genre to another – painting to theatre in this case– and deepen the meanings and narratives through artistic communication.

1656년에 완성된 벨라스케스의 그림 <시녀들>은 그 구성이 매우 독특해서 그림을 본 사람 들에게 많은 궁금증을 자아내며 매력적으로 느껴진다. 어떤 순간을 포착한 것일까? 가운데 어여 쁜 소녀는 누구일까? 화가로 보이는 사람은 커다란 캔버스에 무엇을 그리고 있을까? 액자 같은 조그만 거울에 흐릿하게 비치는 사람들은 누구일까? 왜 난쟁이들이 있을까? 널리 알려진 것처럼, 이 작품은 17세기 스페인 바로크회화의 대표작으로 이후 여러 나라의 많은 화가에게 영감을 주었 거나 다시 그려졌으며 미술뿐만 아니라 음악 문학 철학 심리학 등 다양한 분야에서 의미 있는 반 향과 재해석을 불러일으킨 걸작이다. 20세기 스페인의 대표적인 사실주의 극작가 안또니오 부에 로 바예호(Antonio Buero Vallejo, 1916-2000) 역시 벨라스케스 서거 300주년을 기념하는 해인 1960년에 이 그림과 화가에 연극적 상상력을 불어넣어 무대에 선보였으며 관객들에게 커다란 감 동을 주었다. 본 논문에서는 벨라스케스와 그림 <시녀들>을 자세히 소개하고, 부에로 바예호가 해 석하고 연극적 판타지로 만든 벨라스케스와 『시녀들』에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 한 회화 작품이 연극적 서사로 확장되면서 예술이 상호교류하고 그 과정에서 의미가 더욱 풍성해짐을 살 펴보게 될 것이다.
