The aim of this paper is to research the lexical history of ‘Hju-ji(휴지․休紙)’ appeared in Korean literature written by Chinese character and Hangeul. For instance, The Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty, Suncheon Kim's Korean Letter etc. And it is divided into two parts. One is the historical semantic change, especially focused on ‘semantic devaluation’ of ‘Hju-ji’ from Late Middle Korean to Modern Korean. The other one is the morphological research of ‘Hju-ji’. As ‘Hju-ji’ is a Sino-Korean word, this paper analyzed the lexical features of it in contrast to the ‘Ko-ji(故紙)’ that appeared in both Chinese and Korean literature.

이 글은 한국의 문헌에 등장하는 ‘休紙’의 어휘사를 考究하는 데 목적을 두며, 크게 두 개 부분으로 나누어 기술하였다. 하나는 意味史적 고찰로, <朝鮮王朝實錄>을 비롯한 한문 문헌과 <순천김씨묘 출토 83번 언간>을 비롯한 한글 문헌을 통해 후기 중세로부터 근현대에 이르는 ‘休紙’의 가치 하락 양상을 추적해 보았다. 다른 하나는 형태론적 논의로, ‘休紙’가 韓國 漢字語임에 주목하여 중국 및 한국의 문헌에 모두 등장하는 ‘故紙’와의 대비 속에서 ‘休紙’가 갖는 조어법적 특징을 살펴보았다.
