This study examines the origin of Korean language education content and methods for the ｢Eonmunjamo(諺文字母)｣ included in the 『Hunmongjahoe(訓蒙字會)』. It also identifies the prototype of the Korean language study textbook. It is an authentic Hangeul textbook consisting of contents that should be standardized in learning Hangeul. Hunminjeongeum is made of phonetic characters, but is realized as a syllable. ｢Eon- munjamo(諺文字母)｣ uses explicit teaching methods that reflect the characteristics of Hunminjeongeum. Also, the archetype as a phonics method, origin of consonant letters and vowel letters names, establishing the order of arrangement of consonant letters and vowel letters, the archetypes of the ‘Alphabet approach’ and ‘Syllabic approach’, origin of the basic syllable table(so-called, “Banjul-pyo”). This ｢Eon- munjamo(諺文字母)｣ has its own and unique function as a Korean language learning textbook, rather than a halo effect by 『Hunmongjahoe(訓蒙字會)』.

이 연구는 『훈몽자회』에 수록된 ｢언문자모｣를 대상으로 한글 학습 내용과 방법의 유래(由來)를 살펴서 ｢언문자모｣가 지닌 한글 교육의 원형(原形)으로서의 의의와 가치를 규명해 보는 데 목적이 있다. ｢언문자모｣는 언문을 깨치는 데 표준화되어야 할 내용으로 구성된 이른바 정통 한글 학습 교본(敎本)이다. 자음자와 모음자의 모양과 명칭을 아는 것부터 시작해서 초성자․중성자․종성자의 완전체로서의 음절 합자(合字)로 이어지고, 완전체의 글자에 얹혀 동시에 실현되는 사성(四聲)과 그 표기 방식으로 마무리된다. 이렇듯 ｢언문자모｣는 음소 문자로 창제되었지만 음절로 실현되는 훈민정음의 문자적 특성에 충실한 명시적(explicit) 지도 방법을 담고 있다. 그리고 발음 중심 교수법(phonics method)으로서의 원형, 자음자와 모음자 명칭의 기원, 자음자와 모음자 배열의 전통 확립, ‘자모식’과 ‘음절식’ 교육법의 원형, 그리고 기본 음절표의 기원이 되는 교육적 의의와 가치를 지닌다. 이러한 ｢언문자모｣는 󰡔훈몽자회󰡕에 따른 광배(光背) 효과이기보다는 그 자체가 지닌 한글 학습 교재로서의 독자적이고 독보적인 기능을 갖는다.
