This study adopted a cultural geographical perspective in the context of a critical approach to the concepts of regionality of thought and culture,as well as the correlation between the two concepts themselves. It examined the geography and natural environment in Jiangxi, Shūyuàn; Neo-Confucianism in the context of Jiangxi Yangmingism ; and the network of intellectuals so as to understand Cultural Geography and Confucian culture present in Jiangxi Province, China. The adoption of a cultural geographical perspective (as a methodological mechanism) calls for the examination of regional distributions and characteristics of the prevailing academic culture from a geographical perspective. This requires examining the areas in the Jiangxi region where many Confucian intellectuals (with Neo-Confucian knowledge) are distributed. Furthermore, it requires one to pay attention to Chinese Imperial Examinations in an institutionalized form of thought and culture as based upon Confucian knowledge. Consequently, this study is set in the present iteration of the Jiangxi Province, falling along the southern region of Yangtze River after the 10th century, and as represented by Zhuxiism and Yangmingism as the main areas of concern. In addition, by including the geographical environment, natural environment, and cultural topographic map of this region in the scope of the research, this study examined the aspects of scholars in Humanities from this province (and Confucian intellectuals in particular). Through this preliminary examination, we would be able to understand aspects of Confucian culture and Neo-Confucianism as they present themselves in the Jiangxi region.

이 논문에서는 사상문화의 지역성, 지역과 사상의 연관성이라는 문제의식을 전제로 하여 문화지리학적 관점을 연구방법론으로 채택하였다. 이 논문은 중국 강서성(江西省)의 문화지리와 유교문화를 이해하기 위해 강서의 지리와 자연환경, 서원과 신유학, 강서 양명학, 지식인 네트워크 등에 대하여 검토하였다. 문화지리학적 관점을 방법적 기제로 채택한다는 의미는 어떤 학술 문화의 지역적 분포 및 특징을 지리학적 관점에서 고찰한다는 의미이다. 이는 신유학적 소양을 지닌 유교 지식인들이 강서 지역의 어디에 많이 분포했는지를 파악하는 작업이다. 또 유교적 소양에 기초한 사상문화의 제도화된 형태로서의 과거시험 제도에 주목한다는 의미이기도 하다. 결국 이 논문은 그와 같은 의미에서 주자학과 양명학으로 대표되는 10세기 이후의 양자강 남쪽 지역, 그 가운데 현재의 강서성을 주요 연구대상 지역으로 설정하였다. 또 이 지역의 지리환경과 자연환경 및 문화 지형도를 연구의 시야에 넣으면서 이곳 출신의 인문학자들(특히 유교 지식인)의 면면에 관하여 검토하였다. 이와 같은 사전 검토를 통해 우리는 강서 지역의 유교문화와 신유학의 양상이 어떠한 양상이었는지를 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
