This study set out to discuss Lee Su-gwang's methods of expression and aesthetic characteristics in his poems based on a judgment that there should be research focused on his "expressions" in his poetry. The investigator identified three objects of his gaze including landscapes and things, himself, and worlds in his dreams and examined their respective patterns. His poems depicting landscapes and things showed a tendency of describing scenes just like paintings. Lee captured features of landscapes and things with his elaborate observation and expressed their features in sensible and animated ways. He would sometimes depict colorful aspects of landscape and things in a free atmosphere realistically and other times liken actual aspects to new ones through his imagination to display his original sense of beauty. In his poems about himself, the poet expressed his inner consciousness. He expressed many different emotions including his contemplation over his orientation toward "hiding" and his sources, his righteous wrath over war, and his usual feelings in various ways, whose patterns were using several ancient events related to his circumstances, comparing himself to people of old times that went into retirement or lived in poverty, empathizing with natural objects for his emotions, and gazing at his inside and expressing what was in it directly. Many of Lee's poems about worlds in his dreams depicted fairylands in the Jeolgu(絶句) form. Recalling his experiences in his dreams as much as possible, he described how he strolled about a fairyland, how he wished to soar to a fairyland, and how he wanted to solve problems in this world as a Taoist hermit with miraculous powers. He made records of his episodes in dreams rather than regarding them as wild fancies and made active use of his fairyland experiences in his dreams as content and materials of his poems after waking up from his dreams, which indicates that he expanded the areas and materials of creative poetry writing.

이 글은 이수광의 시에 대해 ‘표현’을 중점에 둔 연구가 필요하다는 판단에 따라 표현 방식과 미적 특성을 논한 것이다. 이수광의 시선이 향하고 있던 세 곳으로 경관과 사물, 자기 자신, 꿈속 세계를 설정하고 각각의 양상을 살폈다. 그 결과 경관과 사물을 읊은 시는 마치 그림과 같이 장면을 묘사하는 경향을 보였다. 이수광은 세밀한 관찰력을 통해 경관과 사물의 특징을 포착하고 그 특징을 감각적이고 생동감 있게 표현하였다. 그는 한가한 정취 속에 경관과 사물의 다채로운 모습들을 사실적으로 그리는가 하면, 때로는 상상을 통해 본모습을 새로운 모습으로 비유함으로써 참신한 미감을 보여주었다. 자기 자신을 읊은 시에서는 내면 의식을 표현하는 양상을 살폈다. 이수광은 ‘隱’ 지향 의식과 출처에 대한 고민, 전란으로 인한 강개한 심정, 자신의 평상시 감회 등 여러 정서를 다양한 방식으로 표현하였는데, 그 양상은 첫째 자신의 처지와 관련한 여러 典故를 사용하는 방식, 둘째 은거했거나 곤궁했던 古人에 자신을 빗대는 방식, 셋째 시인의 감정을 자연물에 이입시키는 방식, 넷째 자신을 성찰하면서 내면을 直敍하는 방식 등이 있다. 이런 방식들을 통해 비유와 상징, 感傷과 悲壯, 담박함과 진솔함이라는 다양한 미감을 보여주었다. 꿈속 세계를 읊은 시는 절구의 형식 속에 仙界를 표현함으로써 화려하고 신비로운 미감을 보인 작품이 많았다. 이수광은 꿈속의 경험을 최대한 기억하여, 선계에서 노니는 자신의 모습, 선계로 비상하고자 하는 마음, 신선이 되어 현세의 문제를 해결하고자 하는 바람 등을 드러내었다. 이수광은 꿈속에서 겪은 일화를 단순한 夢想으로 치부하지 않고 적극적으로 시화하였고 또 꿈속 선계의 경험을 깨어나서 작시할 때에도 시의 내용과 소재로 적극 끌어들였는데, 이는 결국 작시의 영역과 소재를 확대한 결과를 만든 셈이다.
