This study aims to investigate monastic movement and migration in the late antique period in terms of cultural exchange. It is well known that ascetics and monks lived a mobile life from a very early age. Some of them were forced to choose to move due to barbarian invasions and ecclesiastical politics, but many more chose to move voluntarily for the sake of their personal, spiritual, and religious benefits. Some of their movement and migration, although not all, led to the spread of their monastic movement and Christian artifacts and manuscripts to other areas. Moreover, travelogues and pilgrimages, including what they had seen and heard during their travels, provided interesting and useful information regarding the "other world" they had traveled, to their contemporaries and their next generations. In sum, monastic movement and migration in Late Antiquity acted as a crucial medium for promoting Christian cultural exchanges in the Mediterranean civilization. Therefore, monks should be understood as one of the main players in the ancient world with regard to Christian cultural exchange.

본 글은 문화교류(cultural exchange)의 관점에서 고대 후기 동지중해 세계(the eastern Mediterranean)에서 수도사들의 이동(moving)과 이주 (migration)를 연구한 것이다. 사실, 매우 이른 시기부터 금욕주의자들과 수도사들은 이동하는 삶을 살았다. 그 중에 어떤 이들은 사회적이고 교회 정치적인 이유 때문에 강제적으로 이동과 이주를 선택하였지만, 더 많은 이들은 개인적이고, 영적이고 종교적인 이유들로 자발적인 이동을 선택 하였다. 그리고 그들의 이주와 이동 중 일부는 당대의 수도주의 운동을 타 (他)지역으로 전파하고, 중요한 기독교 유물들과 필사본들을 더 넓은 세계로 유포시키는 계기가 되었다. 또한 수도사들이 여행 중에 보고 들은 것을 기록한 여행기(旅行記)와 순례기(巡禮記)는 당대와 이후의 많은 사람들에 게 그들이 여행한 ‘다른 세계’에 대한 정보를 제공해 주었다. 즉, 고대 후기 수도사들이 의도하든 의도하지 않든 간에 그들의 이동은 고대 기독교 문 화를 전달하고 확산시키는 중요한 촉매제 역할을 하였다. 이런 점에서 수 도사들은 고대 교회 문명교류의 주역(主役) 중 하나로 봐야 할 것이다.
