Languedoc, the southernmost part of France, was actually building its own world away from the Capetian dynasty until the 12th century. The count of Toulouse, which appeared during the period of the weakening of Carolingian authority, was the top lord of Languedoc, but began to decline markedly from the end of the 10th century, and the counts of Carcassonne also lost their cohesion from the 11th century due to the discord surrounding the property and began to show the signs of discord. On the other hand, the Trencavel family first appeared as an agent of the count of Toulouse at the end of the 10th century, and by the year 1000, acquiring Albi and Nîme viscounties, began to create their own feudal network. In the middle of the 11th century, with the internal conflict of the Narbonne and Carcassonne families, the influential nobles formed alliances according to their interests. Consequently, Languedoc was largely divided and the Trencavel family took advantage of this chaos and grew rapidly. Raimond Bernard Trencavel sold most of the property inherited by Ermangarde, his wife and sister of Carcassonne, to the count of Barcelona, and began to expand his dominance on the basis of the enormous gold and fief he received in return. As a result, the Trencavel family came to dominate as many as six viscounties(Albi, Nîmes, Bézier, Agde, Carcassonne, and Razès) in the 1080s. This remarkable success was closely tied to the political landscape of the 11th and 12th centuries Languedoc. After the extinction of the house of Carcassonne, the counts of Barcelona entered the Languedoc in earnest, and the house of Toulouse, the traditional leader of the region, also pursued an aggressive expansion policy. As a result, fierce clashes broke out between the two factions, and the Trencavels were able to secure their own interests and autonomy to the maximum for nearly 100 years while maintaining a balance between the two lords. However, in the late 12th century, the war against the counts of Toulouse began to gradually lose their territory and alliance, and in 1209 the Albigensian Crusade eliminated them from history.
