Who are the Korean and German journalists? This study was examined based on this question. It was analyzed which demographic, socio-psychological and journalistic characteristics are present, which similarities and differences exist between them and which changes have occurred in the last 30 years. The survey results of the University of Münster from 1993 and 2005 and the University of Munich from 2015 were used for the German journalists. For Korean journalists, the Korea Press Foundation’s 1993, 2007, and 2017 results were used. As a result, the German journalist emphasized the role of the ‘neutral mediator’ and the Korean journalist the role of the ‘critic’. The biggest difference in Korean and German journalism was the editorial culture. The German journalists were very satisfied with the relationship with their colleagues and superiors in the editorial office and were limited influenced in the gatekeeping process. However, the Korean journalists were dissatisfied within the editorial team and were strongly influenced in their assessment of the news value.

이 연구는 한국과 독일의 저널리스트는 누구인가? 라는 질문에서 출발하여 한․ 독 저널리스트는 인구통계적, 사회심리적 그리고 저널리즘적으로 어떤 특성이 있 으며, 그들 간에는 어떤 공통점과 차이점이 있으며 지난 30년간 어떤 변화가 있었 는지를 비교․분석하였다. 독일 기자는 뮌스터대학교의 1993년과 2005년 조사 결 과와 뮌헨대학교의 2015년 조사 결과를, 한국 기자는 한국언론진흥재단의 1993 년, 2007년, 2017년의 조사 결과를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 연구 결과, 독일 기자 들은 ‘정보전달자’ 역할을 그리고 한국의 기자들은 ‘비판적 감시자’로서 역할을 중 요시하였다. 한․독 저널리즘에서 가장 중요한 차이점은 편집부 내의 문화였다. 독 일 기자는 편집부에서 동료 및 상사들과의 관계를 상당히 만족하고 있었고, 게이 트키핑 과정에서 제한적인 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 한국 기자는 편 집부 내에서 불만족하였고, 뉴스 가치 판단에 많은 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.
