Low Information Literacy of University Students : Are you an information Literate?

초록

영어

Most university students look like information literates. However, can they really access the needed information effectively and efficiently? Most students are familiar of using information gadgets such as a computer, smart phone, and tablet. They have been using portal sites, for example, daum and naver websites in Korea. They are experts of surfing Internet using various devices. Contrary to our assumption that they are information literates, it is surprising that they collect and use improper information to do their assignments at a university. For this reason, we compared information literacy of master students from the University of Graz, Austria and Chungbuk National University (CBNU), Republic of Korea. The survey questions consist of demographic data, self-assessment of one’s information literacy, use of information sources, and knowledge test which was based on the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (ALA, 2000). The results reveal that Korean students were lower information literacy than Austrian students. It is irony that the Korean students were more familiar of using information and communication technologies.
