The purpose of this paper is to empirically test whether the Fisher effect holds in Taiwan and China. In order to determine whether a long-term relationship exists between nominal interest rate and expected inflation rate, monthly data starting in January 2000 were used to identify these effects using ARDL cointegration method. The analysis results are as follows. First, the ARDL bounds test confirmed that there are stable relationships between the two variables in Taiwan and China. Taiwan has an about 0.79 percent interest rate increase for 1 percent inflation over the long term, while China has an 0.29 percent increase of interest rate for the same period. Second, from the estimation results for the error correction models, a significant short-term adjustment process to eliminate the imbalance between the expected inflation rate and nominal interest rate was demonstrated by the coefficients of the error-correction terms in the estimations of the model. Summing up these results, we decide that the weak form of Fisher effects clearly holds in Taiwan and China.

본 논문은 피셔효과가 대만과 중국에 존재하는지를 실증적으로 검정하는 것 이 목적이다. 명목이자율과 예상인플레이션 사이에 장기적으로 안정된 관계가 존재하는지를 파악하기 위해서, 2000년 1월부터 시작되는 월별 데이터를 사용 하여, ARDL 공적분 검정기법으로 이를 파악하려 하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째로, ARDL bounds 검정을 통하여 대만과 중국 에서는 두 변수 사이에 장기적으로 안정적 관계가 존재하는 것으로 확인되었다. 대만에서는 장기적으로 1%의 인플레이션율 상승에 대해서 평균적으로 약 0.79%의 이자율 상승이 발생하며, 중국에서는 같은 경우 평균적으로 약 0.29% 의 이자율 상승이 야기되는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째로, 오차수정모델을 사용하여 추정된 결과에서도, 예상인플레이션율과 이자율 간의 균형에서의 괴리가 존재 할 경우 이를 제거하는 단기적 조정과정이 유의하게 수행되는 것을 오차수정항 의 계수값에서 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 종합하면, 대만과 중국에서 약한 형태의 피셔효과는 분명하게 성립하는 것으로 보인다.
