Under the new phase in which China’s ‘Go-Out’ Policy is implemented and the new strategic background of ‘the Belt and Road’, research on China’s foreign direct investment is significant. This paper analyze the impact of China’s diplomatic relations on China’s foreign direct investment according to the situation of 58 host countries from 2006 to 2016. The results of the empirical analysis are summarized as follows: First, the higher the diplomatic level between the host country and China, the greater the increase in China’s foreign direct investment. Second, market size, resource endowment and technology variables have a positive statistical significance to China’s foreign direct investment as expected. In the meantime, The variable of labor cost is negatively related to the statistics of China’s foreign direct investment. But political stability and China’s foreign direct investment are different from expectations, showing no correlation. In this study, the level of partnership relations between the host country and China is one of the decisive factors of China’s foreign direct investment, It is very important to understand the diplomatic relationship between China and the target countries in understanding China’s foreign investment. Therefore, identifying the role of such diplomatic relations empirically will help to better understand China’s overseas investment.

본 연구는 중국의 경우 일반적인 시장경제국가와 달리 국가가 경제를 주도하 는 사회주의 국가라는 특수성이 존재한다는 점을 감안할 때, 중국의 대외직접 투자(OFDI)에 있어서도 이러한 현상이 나타날 수 있음을 상정하여, 기존의 OFDI 연구 모형에 ‘외교적 거리’(중국과 투자대상국 사이의 외교적 친소관계 정도)라는 개념을 도입하여 변수로 설정하고 동 변수의 설명력을 파악해 보고 자 하였다. 분석은 중국의 대외직접투자가 이루어진 주요 58개국에 대한 2006 년부터 2016년까지의 패널 데이터를 이용해 진행하였는데, 분석결과 본 연구의 예상대로 중국의 경우 동 변수가 OFDI 결정에 있어 중요하게 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 여타 조건이 동일하다는 전제하에 중국의 경우 ‘외교적 거리’가 멀어질수록(즉, 중국 정부가 책정하고 있는 훠반꽌시(伙伴關係) 의 등급 값이 하락할수록) OFDI 규모가 감소하는 특징을 보인다는 점에서 학 계나 재계에 시사하는 바가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 향후, 중국의 OFDI를 좀 더 깊이 있게 이해하기 위해서는 투자대상국의 입 지조건만이 아니라 중국과 투자대상국 사이의 외교적 관계에 대한 검토도 병행 되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.
