The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are often compared to the Holocaust, and are especially remembered as a great tragedy of humankind. However, this generalization was criticized to dilute Japan's responsibility of colonializing Asian countries and starting the war. Furthermore, the postwar discourse of Japan, the only country to experience atomic bomb, helped nationalize the memory of the atomic bomb. The present article attempted to analyze how Oda Makoto had wrote this historical event in his novel HIROSHIMA by neither universalizing this memory nor nationalizing it. First, by beginning the story from the White Sands, where the atomic bomb experiment was conducted, this novel criticized the nationalized discourse concerning atomic bomb. Borrowing the Hopi myth, it persistently portrayed the problems of discrimination that existed in everyday life. Particularly, focusing on the problems of such overlapping harm and damage relationship in Part 3, this novel is also linked to Oda's own thought of victim=perpetrator. Although this novel ultimately held the political leaders responsible for the problems that arose from such a relationship, the novel addressed various questions raised centering the atom bomb as much as possible and succeeds in showing the complexity as it is.

히로시마・나가사키의 원폭은 종종 홀로코스트에 비견되며, 특히 서구식 진보주 의와 과학기술이 낳은 인류의 비극으로서 기억된다. 하지만 히로시마 원폭 위령비의 주어를 둘러싼 논쟁에서 보듯 이러한 보편화는 일본의 식민지 지배나 침략전쟁의 책임을 희석한다는 비판을 받았고, 원폭 투하에 대한 책임을 묻지 않는 대신 전후 일본의 ‘유일한 피폭국’ 담론과 결합하면서 원폭의 기억을 내셔널한 것으로 에워싸 는 데에 일조했다. 본 논문은 이 같은 문제의식에서 1981년에 출판된 오다 마코토의 『HIROSHIMA』가 어떻게 히로시마를 문학화했는지를 분석하였다. 먼저 이 소설은 히로시마를 시간적, 공간적으로 확장한다. 소설에서 히로시마는 일본 내 다른 지역 에서 온 외지인들뿐 아니라 조선인, 미국인 포로, ‘남방’의 유학생들 등이 살아가는 공간으로 그려지며. 소설에 등장하는 많은 미국 거주 일본인들의 출신지이기도 하 다. 또한 소설은 일상적으로 존재하는 차별의 문제를 집요하게 그려냄으로써 무구한 희생자라는 관점을 상대화할 뿐 아니라, 원폭에 이르는 역사 속에 존재하는 다른 가 해와 피해에도 눈을 돌린다. 중첩되는 가해와 피해 관계에서 발생하는 책임 문제를 환상 속에서 최종적으로 정치 지도자에게 돌려 버리는 것이 이 소설의 한계일 것이 다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 소설은 원폭을 둘러싸고 제기되는 다양한 물음들을 최대 한 떠안으며 그 복잡함을 복잡한 그대로 보여주는 데에 어느 정도 성공한다.
