Why do we so willingly pursue a story? The ultimate purpose would be to arrive at its end. Narrative works such as books or movies promote expectations and questions regarding stories as they unfold, while suspending fulfillment until the very end. Fulfillment of the expectations and answers to questions in stories arrive at the end; therefore, the final extent of fulfillment the viewers' sense from the end distinguishes the 'open end' from the 'closed end'. The ‘open end’ method allows some of the resolutions to be answered by the viewer by leaving the closure beyond the ending. This keeps the viewer in suspense, longing for the final closure due to the insufficient sense of closure. The open end goes against our instinctive ‘closure principle’ and is therefore often taken as a narrative strategy to bind us to the text, making us add our imagination to the text and linger, even long after the story has ended. This study suggests that the definition and effect of the open end consist of the compounded outcome of every closure in a multi-layered narrative structure based on a case analysis of the Korean drama . Very close to the end of the story, the ending scene of the drama narrowly and abruptly contains a cliffhanger in the discourse. However, unlike most common usage examples in TV dramas, the cliffhanger in is employed at the very end of the final episode and thus traps the viewer at the moment of climax, with no ensuing scene to resolve the tension. Focusing mainly on multi-layered narrative structures and the cliffhanger effect, this study shows that the lingering effect of the open end is the result of the working dynamics between the story and the discourse.

우리가 어떤 스토리를 기꺼이 따라가는 궁극적 이유는 결국 그 결말에 닿기 위함이다. 책이나 영화 같은 하나의 서사물은 감 상자가 스토리에 대한 기대와 질문을 갖도록 유도하고 그에 대한 충족과 해답을 유예하면서 그들을 결말로 이끈다. 이런 기대 의 충족 여부와 해답의 유무가 결말에서 결정되는 것이며, 이로 인한 최종적인 종결감의 정도가 닫힌 결말과 열린 결말의 판 단 기준이 된다. 열린 결말은 기대와 질문을 충족시킬 해답의 일부를 감상자의 몫으로 남겨놓음으로써 종결의 가능성을 엔딩 바깥으로 열어놓는다. 이는 충분한 종결감을 제공하지 못해 감상자 입장에서 텍스트와 관련된 인지적 노력과 긴장감을 계속 유지하게 하는 결말이다. 이러한 열린 결말은 우리의 완결 욕구를 자극하여 엔딩 이후에도 우리가 텍스트를 떠나지 못하고 잠재적인 스토리를 상상하며 작품의 여운에 젖게 하는 일종의 서사 전략으로서 기능한다. 본 연구는 2016년 방영 당시 시청 률과 평가면에서 고전했지만 열린 결말의 여운으로 인해 종영 이후 지금까지 시청자들의 뜨거운 반응이 이어지고 있는 <달의 연인-보보경심 려>의 사례를 기반으로, 열린 결말에 관한 판단과 그 효과는 서사구조를 구성하는 층위 각각의 종결 여부가 합쳐진 종합적 결과임을 밝힌다. 그리고 이를 통해 <달의 연인>의 열린 결말은 스토리 상에서의 닫힌 결말이 드라마라는 담 화 상의 클리프행어 기법으로 인해 다시 열리면서 창출된 결과임을 알 수 있다. 하지만 <달의 연인>의 클리프행어 기법은 TV 드라마 회차 간 접면으로서의 일반적 사용과는 달리 최종화의 엔딩에 쓰임으로써 다음 장면을 기약할 수 없는 절정의 정점 안에 영원히 시청자를 남겨놓는다. 즉 이로써 구조적으로는 열린 결말이지만 그 희망의 단서가 너무나 미약하고 모호하기 때 문에 여전히 닫힌 결말의 압도적인 자장에서 벗어날 수 없는 결말이 된다. 본 연구는 <달의 연인>의 결말에 대한 시청자 반응 이 이렇듯 닫힌 결말과 열린 결말의 효과가 복합적으로 작동하는 스토리와 담화 간의 역학관계 때문이라고 보고, 드라마의 여운을 창출하는 하나의 기제로서 서사의 역동적인 다층구조 및 연출기법으로서의 클리프행어 효과를 밝히는데 집중한다.
