Painting is a kind of visual art in the form of two dimensions. Factors, such as shape, color, line and space, are its most basic elements. In the development of painting, space, as one of the main elements of it, has always been an important object for painters to explore. And the study of spatial expression is one of the goals pursued by painters of different eras. Therefore, in each important period of painting, different spatial concepts and expressions have been formed. Throughout the history of painting art, we can see that painters in the traditional period reproduced the virtual three-dimensional space which was vivid and realistic, on a two-dimensional plane by studying the laws of vision and observing the way objects exist. However, as the art of painting continues to move forward, the spatial expression reproduced objectively could no longer express the creative purpose of modern painters who are no longer satisfied with simply depicting nature, but instead focus on the painting language itself. That is, painting is no longer a slave of nature, but should be emphasized on its own existence. Under such kind of artistic concept, the space expression of painting should naturally conform to the trend of the times. As a result, various explorations by Fauvist, Cubist, Dadaist, and Surrealist painters for the space expression gradually appeared. Although these space expressions are different, the common feature is that the space expression of painting has become more free and individual. On the whole, western modern painting presents a trend of diversification in terms of spatial expression.

회화는 2차원 공간 형식으로 존재하는 일종의 시각 예술이다. 조형, 색채, 선, 공간 등의 요소는 그 가장 기본적인 요소이며, 그림의 발전 과정 중에 공간은 회화의 주요 요소 중의 하나이며, 줄곧 화가 탐색의 중요한 대상이었다. 공간 표현 방식에 대 한 연구는 각 시대의 화가들이 공통적으로 추구하는 목표 중의 하나였다. 결국 회화의 중요한 시기마다 서로 다른 공간 관념과 표현 방식을 형성하였다. 회화 예술 발전사를 보면, 우리는 전통 시기의 화가가 시각 법칙 및 관찰물 상간의 존재 방식을 연구함으로 써, 2차원 평면에 존재하는 가상의 3차원 공간을 재현한다. 이미지는 사실적이지만 회 화 예술의 발자취를 따라 끊임없이 발달하며, 객관적으로 재현한 공간 표현 방식은 이 미 현대 화가의 창작 목적을 나타낼 수 없다. 이러한 것은 자연을 단순히 모사하는 것 이 아니라 회화 언어 자체에 초점을 맞춘다. 이렇듯 회화는 더 이상 자연의 산물이 아 니라 자신의 존재의 의미를 강조해야 한다는 예술 관념 아래 공간의 표현 방식도 시대 의 흐름에 맞춰야 한다. 이에 따라 야수파, 입체파, 다다파, 초현실주의 화가들의 공간 적 표현방식에 대한 다양한 탐구를 볼 수 있다. 이러한 표현 형태는 서로 다르지만 공 간 표현이 더 자유롭고 개성 있는 것이 공통적인 특징이 있다. 전반적으로 서양 현대회 화는 공간적 표현에서 다원적 양상을 띠고 있음을 확인하였다.
