This paper examines the benefits from a new understanding of young Saul's story. We can reevaluate Saul's meeting with his ‘dod’ in 1 Samuel 10:14-16. This revaluation gives us a new assessment of his character as well as the reconstruction of the situation of the Israelites in the days of young Saul. Through a new affirmative understanding of young Saul, this paper gives a preacher an example so as not to standardize the multifaceted historical lives of the biblical characters in the Old Testament, but he can read accurately the era in which they lived and proclaim properly the teachings of this story to his modern times. According to the traditional view, Saul in 1 Samuel 10: 1-16 and 1 Samuel 10:17ff to 1 Samuel 14 was same age and he was understood as either passive or negative. This presumption makes it harder to understand his behavior consistently. 1 Samuel 10: 1-16 and 1 Samuel 13-14 should be read as they introduce the actions of young man Saul and elderly Saul, respectively. While Saul's narrative tends to view Saul as a negative figure, Saul 10: 1-16 shows Saul as a young faithful man, meeting three group of people in turn. After Saul met Samuel and he was anointed, he went to the place where Samuel told him to go, and he finally met a Philistine official who was called dod at the high place where the garrison of the Philistines was situated. As Saul was a faithful young man who kept his mind, never speaking to others the words of Samuel who anointed him. We can improve the image of young Saul who was faithful to both his father and Samuel explicitly and God implicitly. I propose to evaluate his character by dividing the phase of young Saul, the early period of king Saul, and the late time of king Saul. This classification helps the preacher to introduce biblical characters step by step and find historical lessons.

필자는 본 논문에서 설교자가 청년 사울의 행적을 새롭게 이해함으로서 얻을 수 있는 유익을 살펴본다. 사무엘상 10:14-16에 언급되는 사울과 사울의 ‘도드’와의 만남 사건을 새롭게 이해하여, 그의 청년시절 인물됨에 대한 새로운 평가를 내릴 뿐 아니 라, 청년 사울의 때에 이스라엘 백성들이 처했던 시대적 상황을 재구성해 본다. 본 논 문에서 필자는 젊은 청년 시절 사울에 대한 긍정적인 새로운 이해를 통해 설교자가 구약에 소개되는 성경 인물들의 다면적인 역사적 삶의 정황을 획일화시키지 않고, 그 들이 살았던 시대를 올바르게 읽어 현대적 적용을 정확하게 할 수 있는 하나의 예시 를 제시한다. 젊은 사울의 행적을 다루는 사무엘상 10:1-16과 이어지는 사무엘상 10:17이하의 여 러 사건들은 같은 나이를 가진 사울로 이해했던 전통적인 견해를 따르면, 이어지는 본문에서 보여준 사울의 행동은 소극적 혹은 부정적으로 보아 그의 행동을 일관성 있 게 이해하기 더욱 어려웠다. 우리는 사무엘상 10:1-16과 사무엘상 13-14장은 각각 청년 사울과 장년 사울의 행적을 소개하는 것으로 이해하여 본문을 읽어야 한다. 사울 내러티브를 읽을 때 사울을 부정적 인물로 보는 경향이 많지만, 사무엘상 10:1-16이 보여주는 사울은 사무엘이 말한 모든 세 종류의 사람들을 차례대로 만난다. 사울은 사무엘을 만나 기름부음을 받고 난 뒤 사무엘이 가라고 하는 곳으로 갔었고, 최종적 장소인 블레셋 사람들의 영문이 있는 곳에서 블레셋 관리인 ‘도드’를 만났다. 하지만 사울은 자기에게 기름을 부은 사무엘의 말을 ‘도드’에게도 결코 발설하지 않고 마음속 에 간직한 충실한 청년이었다. 청년 사울은 그의 아버지 기스의 충실한 아들이었을 뿐 아니라 사무엘에게도 충실했던 자였다. 필자는 청년 사울, 초기 사울 왕의 행적, 말기 사울 왕의 행적으로 나누어 그의 인물됨에 대해 평가할 것을 제안한다. 이러한 분 류를 통해 설교자는 성경인물을 각 단계에 따라 소개하고 역사적 교훈을 찾을 수 있다.
