Worship space is a living space. Today, Korean Protestant church, however, is experiencing loss of worship space due to social, technological-civilized, and catastrophic challenges. It goes beyond the suspension of the external system of the church and brings about a crisis of identity in faith. Accordingly, the church needs to more clearly identify the connection between worship space and the identity that seems opaque and find a sustainable way to keep the faith through it. Therefore, this study, through examining Mircea Eliade’s understanding of ritual space as a holy symbol, is to reveal the organic co-relation between religious faith and ritual space. And based on this, I will, by presenting a way in which the theological themes of liturgy are embodied and ritualized in the space, propose the reasons and possible methods for the space to be a symbolic one. In doing to, this study is to confirm that religious faith, as an intuitive experience of numinous – mysterious and holy reality(Rudolf Otto) or hierophany(Eliade), is communicated by the system of symbols and investigate that the feeling of the deep reality is more uplifted in that space with symbols. This paper will also examine the faithful, social, and functional values of worship space in the Protestant church in light of Eliade’s ritual space as a symbol. Through this work, this study attempts to insist that worship space of the Protestant church is, in its nature, a holy symbol that tells the redemptive narrative of triune God pictorially and three-dimensionally, and find out a way for the church to enlighten a true sense of deep mystery of God in us and keep our identity in faith.

예배공간은 살아있는 공간이다. 그러나 오늘날 한국 개신교회는 사회적이고 기술- 문명적, 그리고 재난적인 도전들로 예배공간의 유실을 경험하고 있다. 그리고 그것은 교회의 외적 시스템의 정지를 넘어 신앙정체성의 위기를 초래했다. 따라서 교회는 불 투명하게만 보이는 예배공간과 신앙정체성 간의 연관성을 보다 명확하게 규명하고, 그를 통해 개신교회 신앙의 지속가능한 길을 찾아야 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 미르치 아 엘리아데(Mircea Eliade)의 의례공간의 상징성에 대해 연구함으로써 종교의 신앙 과 의례공간 간의 유기적 상관관계를 규명해낼 것이다. 그리고 이에 근거해 개신교회 의 예배공간에서 예배의 신학적 주제들이 구체화되고 의례화 되는 방식을 제시함으로 써 예배공간이 상징적 공간이 되어야 하는 이유와 방안들을 제시할 것이다. 이를 위 해 본 연구는 종교가 누미노제(das Numinöse), 곧 신비하고 거룩한 실재(Rudolf Otto), 혹은 성현(hierophany)에 대한 경험(Eliade)으로서, 그러한 체험의 과정으로서 신앙이 종교의 상징체계를 통하여 수행됨을 확인하고, 종교의 깊은 실재에 대한 감각 이 상징적 공간 안에서 더욱 고양됨도 살펴볼 것이다. 이어서 개신교회의 예배공간이 지닌 신앙적이고 사회적인, 그리고 기능적인 가치를 엘리아데가 강조한 의례공간의 상징성에 비춰 발견할 것이다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 개신교회의 예배공간이 삼위일체 하나님의 구속적 서사를 회화적, 혹은 입체적으로 그려내는 거룩한 상징임을 제시하 고, 이를 통해 한국 개신교회가 신앙 안에서 하나님의 깊은 신비와 우리 자신에 대한 참된 감각을 일깨우고 우리의 정체성을 이어가는 길을 찾고자 한다.
