This study criticizes issues related to the use of animals in cultural tourism festivals from the perspective of ‘animal rights.’ The distance between nature and humans revealed the limits of human-centered thinking and became an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between humans and the environment. Cultural tourism festivals dealing with animals are facing strong criticism that they lead to the belittlement of consideration or life of animals, thus called ‘animal cruelty’ and ‘animal slaughter day.’ As for the research method, literature studies of animal festivals in the cultural tourism festival and in-depth interviews with experts were conducted. The target audience is a cultural tourism festival expert, animal rights expert and cultural researcher. The primary issues of this study included the ‘lack of awareness of animal rights’ in the field of cultural tourism in animal festivals and the ‘exploitative perspective’ and ‘eco labeling’ of animals. From the animal rights perspective, ‘traditional animal cruelty,’ ‘excuse of revitalizing the regional economy,’ and ‘otherization’ were discussed as study topics. Understanding of animals and recovery of animal rights reach beyond the ‘discourse of animals in festivals’ and lead to the recovery of humanity and problems in education. Finding ‘my original self’ through ‘otherization’ can be a useful device to break the boundary between humans and animals. In addition, ‘unique combination of the near and the far’ in the concept of aura by Benjamin will give way to recognize animals regarded as ‘mindless machines’ by Descartes as ‘life forms’ that feel the same pains and emotions as human beings. In order for the ongoing animal festival to move toward a festival of life-respecting and value-oriented coexistence that understands animals, not animal abuse, it must change the structure of the current familiar way and throw away the shackles. Now the challenge of Brecht's challenge to “verfremdung” will be to erase the dichotomous boundaries between humans and animals, just like the effort to end the era that cut off the dialogue between actors and audiences across the stage and the audience.
