This study examines characteristics related to the theater of cruelty that appear in the 2019 film Joker directed by Todd Phillips. This study aims to deduce characteristics related to the theater of cruelty that appear in the film based on direct references from the film producer and to prove that the essential reasons for the public’s enthusiasm towards the film Joker are cruelty and lunacy. The introduction mentions the research purpose, research background, and research problem and the planned research method and direction were specified using previous research on the film Joker, which is the topic of this study, along with perspectives on the theory of the theater of cruelty. The body of the study classifies the film Joker through seditious acts of violence, language, and social ripple effects and substitutes this with the seditious acts of violence, metaphysical language, and social ripple effects of the theater of cruelty to examine characteristics of the theater of cruelty that appear in Joker. The conclusion summarizes the contents of this study and describes results regarding the characteristics of the theater of cruelty that appear in the film Joker along with the opinions of the researcher and at the same time, describes the limitations and significance of this study. This study goes beyond dimensions of social discourse that simply interpret the film Joker as a story that tragically depicts the lives of the petit bourgeois by projecting them into the performer occupation and makes observations from perspectives of the theater of cruelty, which was the beginning of the avant-garde play, based on direct messages from the film director who produced the film and its actors, and it has research significance in that it provided new points of view regarding the human origins of cruelty and lunacy that are reflected in the work. While conducting this study, the researcher discovered many characteristics related to the theater of cruelty in the film Joker and moved beyond the universal message given by the work to discover possibilities that induce grounds and in-depth questions regarding the origin of human existence, human essence, and discrimination.

본 연구는 2019년 개봉작 토드 필립스 감독의 영화 조커에 드러나는 잔혹극적 특징들을 고찰한 연구 이다. 서론에서는 본 연구자의 연구목적, 연구 배경, 문제 제기를 언급하였고 연구의 주제가 되는 영화 조커의 선행연구와 잔혹연극론 관점을 활용하여 진행할 연구 방법과 방향에 대하여 명시하였다. 본론에 서는 영화 조커를 폭력적 행위, 언어, 사회적 파급력으로 구분하고 이에 잔혹극의 폭력적 행위, 형이상학 적 언어, 잔혹극의 사회적 파급력을 대입하여 조커에 드러난 잔혹극의 특징을 고찰하였다. 결론에서는 본 연구의 내용을 종합하여 영화 조커에 드러나는 잔혹극적 특징에 대한 결과와 본 연구자의 견해를 서 술하였고 동시에 한계와 의의에 대하여 서술하였다. 이 연구는 영화 조커의 이야기를 단순한 소시민의 삶을 광대라는 직업에 투영시켜 비극적으로 그려낸 이야기로 해석하는 사회적 담론의 차원에서 나아가 영화를 제작한 감독과 배우의 직접적인 메시지에 근거, 아방가르드 연극의 시초가 되었던 잔혹극의 관점 으로 바라봄으로써 작품에 투영된 잔혹성과 광기라는 인간 근원에 대한 새로운 시선을 제공했다는 점에 서 연구의 의미가 있다고 사료된다. 연구를 진행하며 본 연구자는 영화 조커에서 많은 잔혹극적 특징들 을 발견했고, 작품이 주는 보편적인 메시지에서 나아가 인간 존재의 근원, 본질, 차별이라는 것에 대한 심도 있는 질문과 사유를 유도하는 가능성을 발견했다. 이에 본 연구는 토드 필립스(Todd Phillips, 1970-) 감독의 영화 조커(JOKER)의 장면에 드러나는 앙토냉 아르토(Antonin Artaud, 1896~1948)의 잔혹극적 특 징을 고찰한 연구로, 개봉 이후 세계적으로 인정받으며 이뤄낸 결과와 사회적 영향력에 대한 본질적인 이유를 평론가들의 담론으로 치부하지 않고, 영화를 제작한 감독과 배우의 직접적인 언급에 근거하여 영 화 속 잔혹극의 특징으로 볼 수 있는 ‘잔혹성’과 ‘광기’ 때문이라는 본 연구자의 주장을 입증하는 것에 연 구 목적을 둔다.
