In the wake of the Covid19 pandemic, many artists are attempting to transition to non-face-to-face performances. This study was inspired by discussions on meeting audiences in non-face to face virtual venues and explores whether online performances offer a solution to the existential crisis in the performative arts market. We worked with ten modern dancers who are engaged in non-face-to-face performance to track and analyze their relationship with audiences. The participants questioned the meaning and expression of their artistry in the non-traditional, non-face-to-face mode the pandemic has forced them to adopt but came to accept it as they found new opportunities to reach audiences that compensated for the limitations. They were able to creatively leverage the new restrictions to achieve creative results that reflected their artistic values, inspiration, and self-reflection. Participants found themselves adapting to the new media by redesigning their performances to meet audiences by actively utilizing appropriate technology. Thus, these artists found that, far from infringing on the nature and artistry of their performances, the non-face-to-face mode offered an opportunity for enhanced artistic self-awareness and a broadening of their creative horizons.

코로나19의 재난 상황에서 많은 예술가들이 비대면 공연으로의 전환을 시도하고 있다. 본 연구는 집합 제한으 로 존폐위기에 놓여있는 공연시장에서 비대면 공연이 관객을 만나기 위한 창구로서 가능할 것인가에 대한 논 의에서 출발하였다. 비대면 무관중 공연을 처음 경험하는 현대무용가 10인에 대한 실행연구를 진행하여, 연구- 실행-반성-재인식의 단계를 거치며 예술가가 관객과의 관계에 대한 의미를 반추해가는 과정을 추적하고 분석하 였다. 예술성 발현에 대한 의문을 가졌으나 사회적 대안으로 비대면 공연을 받아들인 참여자들은 몇몇 제약에 도 불구하고 예술적 가치와 영감 그리고 자신에 대한 성찰을 충분히 투영시키는 창조적 성과를 보였다. 참여자 들은 새로운 미디어에 적응하며 자발적으로 자신의 공연을 재설계하고 있음을 관찰할 수 있었다. 또한 개개인 의 독특한 표현과 접근을 상황에 맞게 추구해가는 스스로에 위안을 받으며 자존감과 존재감을 회복할 수 있었 다. 이는 새로운 방법을 시도할 수 있는 용기와 열정 회복으로 이어져 적정기술(appropriate technology)을 적 극 활용하여 관객만나기가 가능하다는 긍정적 인식의 변화를 보여주었다. 결과적으로 비대면 공연의 확산은 공 연의 본질과 그 예술성을 침해할 것이라는 부정적 인식을 넘어서 예술가들의 자기 각성을 이끌어내는 터닝포 인트로 작용하였고, 예술가들의 창작적 지평을 넓히는 계기로 작용함을 확인하였다.
