Emma is the greatest masterpiece of Austen’s works, noted for its comprehensive approach to marriage issues. The plot and character descriptions reflect the reality of England at that time. At that time, society defines people’s social status by their property. It highlights the influence of social views on the heroines’ marriage views and reveals women’s status and fate in British. In the novel, several protagonists experience a dramatic change in the face of love and marriage and finally accomplish the life decision, respectively. Their views on love and marriage inspire people to consider real marriage carefully. Through the heroines’ respective love and marriage experiences, Austen reveals various problems faced by most young middle-class women in British society at that time. There is no other way out for them than to marry a rich husband. Austen reveals the traditional ideas of using marriage to seek economic security and improve economic status this essay discusses marriage views based on this cultural background in the 18th-19th centuries. It contrasts the mainstream view of marriage with the ones in Emma.
