Confucian ancestral rites that are held in the Korean society have been passed down under the name of tradition. But in modern times, it has been in conflict with religious ceremonies and is being transformed depending on the situation of the ritual organizer. Accordingly, this study examined the procedures and gender roles of ancestral rites, as well as its sustainability based on the experiences of Confucian ancestral rites organizers in Jeju-do. Reduced range of subjects for rituals, change in ritual time, selecting to combine a couple’s memorial day, simplification of ritual food preparation procedures, etc. were found among the procedures of ancestral rites. Ancestral rites are generally passed down from parents to their children, but the current trend is gradual simplification according to social changes and living conditions. The meaning of continuing rites of passage is found to be weakened and the sense of responsibility to carry out rituals decreases especially for the younger generation. Therefore, cooperation is needed that makes it possible to clearly recognize and accept the purpose and meaning of conducting ancestral rites, rather than the formal procedures of simply making food and holding the ancestral rites. If ancestral rites are recognized as a day for strengthening the solidarity of families, it will continue even if the procedures and methods are reduced and transformed. Accordingly, in order to maintain ancestral rites, it is more important to recognize it as a medium for strengthening kinship bonds.

우리사회에서 행해지고 있는 유교식 제사의례는 전통이라는 이름으로 계승되고 있으나 현대에 들어와서 종교식 제사의례와 충돌하거나 의례 주관자의 상황에 따라 변용되고 있 다. 이에 이 글에서는 제주도에서 이행되고 있는 유교식 제사의례 주관자들의 경험을 토대 로 하여 제사의례 절차와 성역할, 제사의례의 지속가능성을 살펴보았다. 제사의례 내용 중에 제사 대상자의 범위 축소, 제사 시간의 변화, 부부 기일의 합제 선택, 제사음식 준비 과정 간소화 등이 나타남을 보았다. 전반적으로 제사의례는 부모에서 자식으로 대물림되면서 계승되고 있으나 사회변화와 삶의 조건에 따라 점차 간소화되는 추세에 있다. 특히 젊은 세대로 내려올수록 통과의례 지속의 의미가 약화되고, 의례 이행의 의무감이 줄어들고 있다. 따라서 제사의례를 이행한다는 것은 단순히 음식을 만들고 차례를 지내는 형식적인 절차를 의미하는 것보다는 그 의례를 수행하는 목적과 의미를 분명하게 인식하고 수용할 수 있는 협력이 필요하다. 제사의례 이행이 가문의 결속력을 강화하는 날로 인식할 수 있어야 절차와 방법이 축소 되고 변형되면서도 지속될 것이다. 이에 제사의례를 유지하기 위해서는 전통을 고수하는 것보다는 혈연공동체 결속의 매개체로 인식할 필요가 있다.
