This paper aims to consider how immigrants experience liminality at multicultural festivals in Korea, and how this liminality affects immigrants' lives in Korea through the example of "MAMF."To this end, research was conducted through literature surveys and in-depth interviews with participants. In the pre-liminality phase, migrants are discriminated against and ignored in Korean society. However, when the festival begins and enters the liminality phase, the existing order of discrimination and alienation temporarily collapses, and immigrants again feel pride in their country of origin and sense of ownership. When the festival ends and enters the post-liminality phase, immigrants will be re-entered into the existing order in the pre-liminality, but they will be able to live with the power to resolve social conflicts through the liminality. Through the above process, multicultural festivals can regularly promote understanding of other cultures, prevent conflicts, and serve as a mechanism to remind migrants of their identity in the process of taking root in multicultural society in Korea. However, in order for the liminality of the festival to appear strong and consistent, it should be based on the premise that migrants must have sufficient autonomy as the main agents of the festival. Therefore, it is proposed that research on the role of private-led multicultural festivals will be actively conducted in the future.

본 논문은 우리나라의 다문화축제에서 이주민들은 리미널리티를 어떻게 경험하며, 이러한 리미널리티가 이주민들의 한국에서의 삶에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지를 ‘맘프’의 사례를 통해서 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해서 문헌조사, 참여자 심층인터뷰 등을 통해서 연구를 진행하였다. 프리리미널리티 단계에서 이주민들은 차별을 받거나, 무시를 당하기도 한다. 그러나 축제가 시작되고 리미널리티 단계에 진입하면 차별과 소외의 기존질서가 일시적으로 붕괴되며, 이주민들은 억눌려 있던 출신국에 대한 자부심과 주인의식 등을 다시금 느끼게 된다. 축제가 끝나고 포스트리미널리티 단계에 진입하면 이주민들은 프리리미널리티에서의 기존 질서 속으로 다시 들어가게 되지만, 리미널리티를 통해서 사회적 갈등을 해결할 수 있는 힘을 얻고 살아가게 된다. 다문화축제는 위와 같은 과정을 통해서 우리나라에서 다문화사회에 대한 인식이 뿌리내리는 과정에서 정기적으로 타문화에 대한 이해를 증진하고, 충돌을 막으며, 이주민들에게 자신의 정체성을 일깨우는 기제로 작용할 수 있다. 다만 이와 같이 축제에서의 리미널리티가 강하고 일관되게 나타나기 위해서는 이주민들이 축제의 주체로서 충분한 자율성을 지녀야 한다는 것이 전제가 되어야 할 것이다. 따라서 향후 민간주도형 다문화축제의 역할에 대한 연구가 활발하게 이루어질 것을 제안한다.
